Job description
As the Database Team Lead in our corporate Information Services department, you will be responsible for leading the daily management of corporate database platforms, including Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, Azure SQL Database, and Azure SQL Managed Instance. You’ll play a key role in aligning CBN with modern database technologies, contribute to the design and migration to Azure Cloud, and ensure data accessibility, security, and integrity.

What You Will Do
- Lead the daily management of CBN’s Corporate Database Platforms, encompassing Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, Azure Cloud SQL Databases, and Azure SQL Managed Instance;
- Collaborate with software development and systems management teams for system design, performance optimization, and troubleshooting related to database applications;
- Translate high-level business requirements into data models, metadata, test data, and data quality standards;
- Design the structure and layout of data systems, including databases, warehouses, and lakes;
- Implement database management systems, defining data schemas, optimizing data storage, and establishing access controls and security measures;
- Develop and implement the long-term technology strategy and innovation roadmaps for analytics, data engineering, and data platforms;
- Establish and maintain department standards, guidelines, processes, system documentation, and disaster recovery plans to ensure data quality, integrity, and recoverability;
- Design and implement ETL processes for various data sources and lead semi-annual and annual disaster recovery testing with a cross-functional team; and
- Various other duties and responsibilities.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- College of University Degree in Computer Science, Data Science or related field, or equivalent combination of education and years of relevant work experience.
- At least 5 years of relevant experience administering and supporting multi-node clustered Microsoft SQL Server Database platforms.
- At least 3-5 years of relevant experience in the design and implementation of data models for enterprise database, data warehouse, data lake initiatives.
- Direct experience with migrating and/or managing Azure Premised Database platforms (SQL Database PaaS, Azure SQL Managed Instances)
- Experience leading projects involving data warehousing, data modeling, and data analysis.
- Strong understanding of database administration best practices (ie. Schema management, index optimization, DBMS hardening, backup/recovery methods, disaster recovery).
- Understanding of entry-relationship modeling, metadata systems, and data quality tools and techniques.
Technical Skills
- Troubleshooting and optimizing SQL and database performance and health issues, including using database counters and statistics and other third-party monitoring tools.
- Adept in SQL/T-SQL and able to assist developers with the review and optimization of SQL.
- Business intelligence tools and technologies such as ETL, PowerBI, etc.
Soft Skills and Abilities
- Excellent organization/time-management/prioritization skills
- Established leadership skills (teams, projects)
- Attention to detail.
Mandatory Requirements
- Fluency (verbal and written) in English.
- Ability to participate in the following on-call rotation: Approx. 1 week on/1 week off
Security Clearance Requirements
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Government of Canada Secret (Level II) personal security clearance.
