1. Internship Topic

Advanced Data and Artificial Intelligence Applications for Environmental and Social Safeguard Monitoring

2. Assignment Purpose

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) applies its Safeguard Policy Statement to all financed projects to avoid and manage potential impacts and risks to people and the environment. This involves screening and categorizing project risks, assessing and managing environmental and social risks, and monitoring projects in developing member countries during implementation. To enhance ADB’s policy implementation and risk management, a new Integrated Safeguard Management System (ISMS) has been developed and in the pilot testing stage. This system, when fully implemented, will have capacity to collect and report on key environmental and social indicators and geographic data from projects. However, a significant amount of data is still manually reviewed and processes, including environmental and social monitoring reports which ADB receives from project clients. To advance this, ADB is currently doing further scoping on additional data management and processing systems including potential for the use of Chat GPT-4 and other large language models to developing advanced reports with red-flag analysis as well as troubleshooting data and utilizing relevant insights from vast amounts of project data and reports. This internship assignment will engage a Data Analyst with knowledge of large language models and other advanced analytics to further scope and support ADB user applications. His/Her main outputs will include, but is not limited to, a detailed scoping on large language model applications, data mapping, report visualization, and application of appropriate advanced analytics for enhancing ADB’s environmental and social safeguard management and monitoring.

3. Summary of Job Description

The Data Analyst / AI Specialist will work on the following assigned tasks:

• Scoping report on ADB’s Environmental and Social Safeguards, current ISMS and data systems and opportunities for use of advanced data processing, including large language models.

• Review of current business data and analyzing results, and discovering trends and patterns on existing data ready for consumption), which will help guide the team’s strategy;

• Identify areas where the team is weak analytically and scoping out improvements to have greater impact;

• Help define metrics to ensure value of delivery for both operation support and compliance review;

• Work with analytics engineering to model and build out new data sets that enable the team to generate better insights or develop new reports.

Duration:11 weeks

Timing: June 2024 onwards

6. Expected Outcomes

Scoping report on use of AI and advanced analytics and data management systems for ADB environmental and social management and report, with supporting data systems analysis, visuals, presentation materials.

Qualifications

7. Education requirements

He/She should have a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or Information Technology, or other related field focused on quantitative disciplines.

He/She should have experience with large language models such as Chat GPT-4 and be proficient in manipulating large data sets, reporting platform, and data warehousing, as well as experience in Power BI report development, data analytics and reporting including data modelling and data visualization.

He/She should be a natural problem solver, critical thinker, detail oriented and highly adaptive, and a fast learner. He/She must be a great communicator, comfortable working with multidisciplinary teams, and have a strong desire to make better decisions and influence strategy through strong analysis.

A must for the program, the candidate should be enrolled in a Master’s- or PhD-level program at a school in one of ADB’s member countries.

8. Relevant Experience

• Working experience with large language models

• Working experience on database development experience using Microsoft SQL

• Minimum 2 years hands-on development experience on SQL (Stored procedure, SSAS, Dimensional Modelling, Views, trigger, index, SQL Jobs etc.)

• At least 3 years’ experience in Microsoft Business Intelligence Tools (SSAS, SSIS, SSRS), Microsoft SQL Management Studio, and Qlik sense application

• Working experience and good understanding on Cloud environment using Azure services

• Solid understanding of the SDLC & Agile Scrum
