Offer Description

UiT The Arctic University of Norway has established «The Arctic MSCA-PF program» (uit.no/project/arcticmsca ) to recruit excellent young researchers planning to apply for a Marie Skƚodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship (MSCA-PF) to pursue a career in research. We invite applications from promising young researchers within the field of Public International Law. The selected candidate will write a proposal for a 24-month MSCA-PF at UiT together with Ass. Prof.   Youri van Logchem . This is an opportunity to accelerate your research career while living in the urban research city of Tromsø, uniquely located at the top of the world surrounded by some of Europe’s last pristine wild nature.

This call is one of 35 from pre-selected supervisors at UiT The Arctic University of Norway through the “Arctic MSCA-PF program”. Successful postdoc candidates will be invited for a three-day MSCA-PF symposium June 4-6, 2024 (hybrid physical/digital event, see details at uit.no/project/arcticmsca/program-structure ). At this event, the candidates will present their past research achievements, discuss future plans with their potential supervisor and learn how to write a successful MSCA-PF application. The selected candidates will, jointly with the supervisor, write the MSCA-PF application by the deadline of September 11, 2024.

In this call we search for talented, young researchers within the field of Public International Law as presented by Ass. Prof.   Logchem:

My main area of expertise is public international law, particularly international law of the sea, international energy law, and international environmental law. I have published widely on international law issues, with an emphasis on issues related to the law of the sea. Over the years, I have also built up extensive experience teaching (at the postgraduate and undergraduate level and by giving training sessions, including at the ITLOS) on such issues. I have also acted as an expert witness for the International Relations and Defence Committee of the UK House of Lords inquiry into the 1982 Law of the Sea Convention. Maritime boundary disputes have been one of my main areas of research both current and present and my work on this issue has been cited before international courts and tribunals. My monograph on the rights and obligations of States in disputed maritime areas was published with Cambridge University Press in 2021. Submarine cables and pipelines have also been staples of my research; I was awarded the Rhodes Academy Submarine Cables Award for an article I wrote on cables. Another research focus has been international shipping, including Arctic shipping and maritime autonomous surface ships (MASS). Current research projects I am inter alia working on deal with legal issues surrounding: MASS; submarine cable protection; disputed waters that are located off disputed land territory; joint development in disputed maritime areas; climate change and international shipping.

Please send your CV (max 3 pages) and describe a research project that will strengthen and complement the presented research (max 2 pages) to [email protected] by Feb 16th 2024. Mark your application “Arctic MSCA”. Successful candidates will be contacted in late March 2024.
