Job Summary:
The Biodiversity and Sustainability Lead will play a pivotal role in the ongoing review and implementation of the Organisations Biodiversity and Sustainability Plan including the drafting and implementation of any future plans as well as execution of same.
The role holder will be responsible for developing and implementing strategies to promote sustainability and biodiversity, having the ability to engage with all relevant stakeholders in raising awareness, conducting assessments, creating policies, collaborating with various stakeholders to ensure environmental sustainability and biodiversity initiatives align with the Organisations goals and objectives.
Objectives
· Develop and own the Biodiversity & Sustainability plan for the organisation. Formulate and revise sustainability and biodiversity plans, policies and procedures in accordance with local, national and international regulations.
· Develop and implement programs to conserve and protect biodiversity within the estate. Collaborate with stakeholders to support biodiversity initiatives such as native seed banks, native plants and tree regeneration.
· Stay abreast of laws, regulations and trends. Ensure organisational compliance with environmental laws and regulations related to biodiversity and sustainability. Oversee CSRD Directive preparation and rollout.
· Conduct audits and assessments to identify the organisation’s ecological and carbon footprint, analyse data to identify areas for improvement and formulate actions plans to minimise negative impacts.
· Monitor and collect data related to biodiversity and sustainability efforts. Prepare regular reports detailing the organisations progress in biodiversity and sustainability initiatives.
· Work with key stakeholders such as the Estate Manager, Head Gardener and external Landscape Architects to lead projects and provide advice on the sustainable management of our ecological resources leading to the enhancement of environmental practices and positive outcomes for both Westport Estate and the ecosystems under consideration.
· Lead the green committee, be the subject matter expert guiding department heads and lead on all biodiversity and sustainability initiatives across the organisation.
· Develop and deliver training programs to promote and raise awareness to encourage eco-friendly behaviour and conservation efforts among employees, schools, visitors and the community.
· Develop and implement on-site conservation programs aimed at preserving and enhancing the biodiversity of the entire estate such as habitat restoration, wildlife monitoring, woodland, verges, wild flora grasslands and open areas in a biodiversity friendly manner, developing and implementing programs to conserve and protect the biodiversity of the estate.
· Foster partnerships and collaborations with internal and external stakeholders (employees, management, community organisations, NGO’s government agencies) to ensure alignment with industry best practices, regulatory requirements and aligning with the core values and goals of Westport Estate
· Manage budgets allocated for biodiversity and sustainability projects to optimise the use of resources and achieve maximum impact in conservation efforts.
· Manage the applications for appropriate funding and supports as may benefit biodiversity and sustainability initiatives.
· Analyse data and metrics related to sustainability and biodiversity performance, audits, assessments and provide insights and recommendations for optimizing resource use and minimizing environmental impact. Prepare and present detailed reports to internal and external stakeholders.

Required Experience & Skills
· Have at least three years relevant satisfactory experience of work in biodiversity, sustainable development goals, energy, and climate action.
· Demonstrable experience in conducting biodiversity & sustainability audits, policy and programme writing and change management pertaining to sustainability.
· Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both oral and written) and demonstrable experience of how to effectively engage with stakeholders, galvanise support and present findings.
· Possess a high standard of technical training relevant to the areas of natural sciences and natural resources management.
· Experience engaging with various frameworks including Ecovadis and other sustainability related accreditation bodies.
· In-depth knowledge of biodiversity principles, environmental regulations, conservation practices and sustainability programs.
· Project management skills including the ability to plan, execute and evaluate biodiversity and sustainability projects.
· Self-motivated with ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Strong advocacy skills and experience driving projects to completion.
· Have experience of habitat survey and mapping, data management and analysis methods, using a variety of software.
Preferred Qualifications
- Degree level (at least level 8 on the National Framework of Qualifications) in a subject relevant to biodiversity including but not limited to environmental science, ecology, earth/natural sciences, botany or natural resources management.
- Experience delivering training.
- Experience with water stewardship and Uisce Eireann Water Stewardship Programme
- Excellent computer skills and proficient in the use of Microsoft Office.
- Knowledge of relevant software and tools for data analysis and reporting.
