The specialist will be working in close coordination with the national Project coordinator regarding project implementation. He/she will work under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative for Sri Lanka and the Maldives and the Assistant FAO Representative (Programme).
Technical Focus
Technical Focus
Support the implementation of the multidimensional solutions strategy on fish loss reduction in Sri Lanka, including assessment of existing best practices, reviewing reports and building capacity of relevant stakeholders.
Tasks and responsibilities:
- Conduct a detailed assessment of post-harvest practices in Sri Lankan boats using ring net systems.
- Identify critical points in the post-harvest process that contribute to losses and inefficiencies.
- Research and recommend appropriate technologies and equipment for modification.
- Design a modified ring net system incorporating the recommended technologies.
- Develop a detailed implementation plan, including timelines, budget estimates, and resource requirements.
- Provide specifications for all equipment and technology to be utilized in the modified system.
- Design training modules for fishermen and crew members on the operation and maintenance of the modified system.
- Establish a monitoring and evaluation framework to assess the impact of the modifications on post-harvest losses.
- Provide ongoing technical support and guidance during the implementation phase.
Candidates Will Be Assessed Against The Following:
Minimum Requirements:
- Post Graduate Degree (at least a master’s degree or equivalent) in fisheries or related fields, preferably in the context of fisheries management.
- At least 5 years of working experience in the field of fisheries and fishing gear technology.
- Working knowledge of English and Sinhala/Tamil.
- National of Sri Lanka or resident in the country with a legal work permit.
Technical/Functional Skills:
- Familiarity with effectively use standard office software, such as MS Office (Windows, Word, Outlook, Excel, Power Point).
- Good interpersonal skills, ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholder groups.
- Strong analytical and research skills.
- Strong analytical skills and experience in developing technical reports – undertaking research, primary and secondary data collection, analysis and report writing.
- Ability to work/deliver independently with minimal supervision.
