This position is a one year, (potentially renewable) contract to facilitate the Welcome Home Initiative, providing start-up assistance, life-skills coaching and on-going support for individuals and families transitioning into housing after experiencing homelessness or unstable housing situations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Intake Management and Program Support:

  • Completes intake, risk assessments and termination summaries as required; prepares and submits monthly, quarterly, and annual statistical reports to the ministry and The Salvation Army as required
  • Coordinates and facilitates life skills programming for program participants that includes, but is not limited to: financial literacy, employment skills, hygiene, health, food literacy, drug awareness, mental wellness, education planning, tenant’s rights, first aid, etc.
  • Provides appropriate follow-ups, monitors participant’s activities as per ministry and Salvation Army standards
  • Ensures that programs are operated in accordance with the mission and values of The Salvation Army, and with applicable contract(s) and or agreements
  • Responds to program evaluations to adapt and improve program content
  • Liaises with Police, funders, court personnel, community agencies, government assistance programs, families, and other staff members
  • Maintains program supplies, makes program purchases and arranges for delivery of goods
  • Keeps an accurate and up-to-date record of community resources for distribution to participants

Participant Support

  • Liaises with the participants’ supervising case manager, probation officer, social worker, or other community services to discuss participant’s progress
  • Ensures the physical and psychological needs of residents are being met through programming, goal setting and life skills coaching, etc.
  • Monitors participant’s progress and maintains relevant file information as per ministry or The Salvation Army requirements
  • Provides practical and emotional support and advocacy as required
  • Engages in the development of inter-personal relationships that promote dignity and respect
  • Performs required scheduled check-ins of clientele, home visits and follow-up

CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT

Governance Boards and Councils: Corps Leadership Board

Internal: Team members, clients

External: Police officers, social services, governmental agencies, various community boards’ members.

Community Networking and Partnerships:

  • Represents Salvation Army on various community boards.
  • Liaises with the client’s social workers and community services to discuss participant’s progress
  • Advocates on behalf of clients in association with their community support network

MANAGERIAL RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Reports directly to CFS Director
  • Direct reports: none

FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:

  • Minor material responsibility (access to private information).
  • The incumbent has responsibility for the wise use of his/her own resources.
  • The incumbent will be authorized to distribute practical aid to program participants, including vouchers and bus passes.
  • Does not process any financial transactions with no budget responsibilities.

Working Conditions:

The performance of the job requires a moderate amount of keyboarding and manual record keeping, and occasionally lifting, packing clients and resident’s property, personal effects and engaging in recreational activities. The incumbent’s work environment is typically in an office at a facility setting.

The incumbent will work under the following disagreeable conditions:

  • Dealing with participants may expose you to acts of aggression.
  • Work schedule participants.

Exposure to hazards

The job incumbent may be exposed to the risk of minor to moderate injury or illnesses due to:

  • May experience elements of aggression from participants.
  • Other potentially dangerous situations

Precautionary measures

The incumbent must take the following precautionary measures (in addition to health and safety rules):

  • Universal Precautions
  • Current Certification in First Aid/CPR
  • Criminal Police Investigation Check (CPIC)
  • Non-violent crisis intervention training

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:

  • The successful job applicant will have completed one (1) year of Community College, in relevant social work studies.
  • An alternative level of education and experience may be acceptable.

Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements

  • A minimum of one year of prior related experience, including frontline involvement in a social service environment.

PREFERRED SKILLS/CAPABILITIES:

  • Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility.
  • Ability to educate and/or coordinate with other providers on various life skills.
  • Strong critical thinking and analytical skills for daily communication with clientele.
  • Note taking and file management.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to identify challenges, gathering all the facts of a person’s case.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills to engage participants and refer them to resources in the community, journeying with them on their path to wellness.
  • Familiar with community resources.
  • Be a team player and a person with positive thinking to develop a good working relationship with other NGO’s.
