Position Details

General Statement MSU’s Carpenter Shop maintains over 5,000,000 square feet of buildings of varying ages which, in addition to the traditional classroom, office, and residential spaces, include teaching and research labs, recreational and NCAA sports facilities, commercial kitchens, retail centers, the Museum of the Rockies and other specialty use spaces. Specialty use square footage may have specific component/installation requirements to be compliant with safety and other use-specific needs. MSU Carpenters apply journeyman-level skills in maintaining, repairing, renovating, and remodeling these space and use types under minimal supervision.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintain, repair, renovate, and remodel institutional, commercial, and residential building types.
  • Install, maintain, and repair: floors and floor coverings; doors and door systems including closures, safety glass, strikes, and hinges; windows and window coverings; acoustical ceilings and walls; stairways; railings; partitions; signs; roofs, insulation; siding; and concrete formwork.
  • Repair and maintain classrooms and office fixtures including fixed seating, chairs, tables, benches, dry-erase boards, and bulletin boards.
  • Construct cabinets, counters, and other related items.
  • Install countertops and partitions.
  • Perform concrete form and concrete work.
  • Prepare wood surfaces for refinishing.
  • Safely operate and maintain a variety of hand, power, and stationary tools normally associated with the Carpentry industry.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills JOURNEYMAN CARPENTERREQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school graduation or equivalent, plus four years journeyman-level carpentry experience, or documentation certifying achievement of journeyman level status, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Working knowledge of standard construction practices, methods, materials, tools and equipment of carpentry trade.
  • Demonstrated experience in the following carpentry skills: Framing, trim and molding, door and window installation.
  • Demonstrated experience in one or more of the following basic carpentry skills: cabinet installation, acoustical ceilings, interpreting blueprints.
  • Demonstrated competence working on building components such as windows, doors, window and door hardware, stairs, and railings.
  • Demonstrated competence building and repairing structural systems.
  • APPRENTICE CARPENTERREQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school education or G.E.D/HiSet.
  • Demonstrated competence using personal computers and software, such as word processing, spreadsheets, electronic calendars, and email. Microsoft Office Suite is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with a diverse range of individuals, such as customers, staff members, administrators, and vendors.
  • Experience in building, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, or a maintenance trade.

  • Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills JOURNEYMAN CARPENTERPREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with historical building/building component maintenance, repair, and restoration.
  • Experience in specialty tasks like welding, concrete forming and repair, cabinet making, solid surfaces, seating systems, and/or ceiling systems, metal framing, manual and electronic security hardware, stair layout and construction, and exterior finish work.
  • APPRENTICE CARPENTERPREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Two years of Apprenticeship program completed or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated experience in tasks such as framing, trim and molding, door and window installation.

    Position Special Requirements/Additional Information Must possess currently or be eligible to obtain a valid State of Montana Driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record (less than 12 points). Do NOT send a copy of the driver’s license.
