Purpose of the Role:
The postholder will have broad knowledge of the UK’s creative industries and culture sector, They will work as part of the team of UK arts and culture specialists with excellent relationships with all Art Form Directors, other Senior Relationship Managers, and colleagues in the Arts network to ensure that the work of cross-sectoral individuals, networks and organisations is embedded into relevant global programmes, while aligning to the British Council vision, strategic priorities, and the Global Arts Framework.
They will use their creative industry expertise and management skills to ensure the development, partnership building and quality control of high-quality, strategic cross-sectoral activities within the Arts portfolio of Global Programmes.
The Senior Relationship Manager will ensure that all content contributes to achieving targets, meets global and local requirements as appropriate, and creates international opportunities for the UK sector while supporting the British Council’s cultural relations objectives.
Main Accountabilities :
Strategy and planning
- As a senior member of the global Arts team, contributes to the strategy for the development of programmes and projects within the Arts Global Programme portfolio, helping to establish medium and long-term development plans which will particularly support diversifying who we work with and the ways we work with them.
- Connects with teams across the global network to ensure that we are creating opportunties for exciting and dynamic creative talent which aligns to strategic aims and objectives of the Arts Global Programme portfolio.
Sector/subject expertise
- Builds and maintains an authoritative knowledge of the UK’s strengths, reputation and capacity in culture, with a particular focus on artists, performers, makers and agents of change who fall outside the established art forms.
- Builds and maintains respectful and trusted relationships with creative individudals, collectives and networks, including those who are finding innovative ways to reach people outside traditional “arts” channels.
- Understands issues of structural racism and other discriminations, in particular how they relate and are manifested in the UK’s arts and culture sector. Will use this knowledge to constantly update Arts’ global programmes so that they are relevant to a new generation of UK arts and culture professionals.
- Develops long-term partnerships at the highest level with relevant organisations to ensure programmes and projects will deliver according to the British Council’s cultural relations objectives.
- Builds and maintains external networks in order to access, absorb and apply professional best practice to the portfolio of arts programmes and projects.
Relationship & stakeholder management
- Develops trust-based relationships with key partners, network-organisations, opinion formers and stakeholders to promote projects and programmes as activity that supports the partnership work in the UK and that will offer opportunities for UK organisations.
- Liaises with partners and stakeholders to maintain external involvement in the planning and delivery of the programmes and projects.
- Develops a network of relationships with a diverse range of external organisations who are capable of/ potentially capable of delivering projects in an international context, supporting them to develop capacity in international working through advice and training as appropriate.
Leadership & management
- May provide programme leadership to small or medium-sized projects within the Global Programme framework
- Contributes to the effective decision-making and planning for arts programmes and projects.
- Works on multiple programmes at one time within different cultural and operational contexts and in complex matrix environment balancing multiple projects with different cultural and operational contexts.
- Champions a culture in arts where all colleagues’ expertise and knowledge is respected, whether gleaned from one art form, or from a more cross-sectoral context. Celebrates the need for sector expertise while professionally modelling the benefits of cross-disciplinary working.
- To actively contribute to an inclusive and anti-racist organisational culture, being aware of own biases, and taking action to mitigate against these. Ensuring people feel valued and are treated equitably, with support for people’s well-being and mental health.
- Understand the British Council’s approach to equality, diversity and inclusion and how it applies to role and make time for learning and development relating to EDI and anti-racism.
Business development
- Identifies and manages the organisation, production and submission of high quality, market responsive bids/tenders/proposals/sponsorship appeals, ensuring timely and appropriate input from all necessary internal stakeholders/experts/functional advisors. Ensures compliance with agreed internal governance/review/sign-off arrangements.
- Represents the British Council at customer/client/partner presentations and negotiations, ensuring the commercial/strategic interests and professional reputation of the organisation are protected and promoted.
- Provides support to the Arts fundraising programme, including ensuring timely and comprehensive communication of opportunities, provision of specialist advice and cooperation with delivery of supporter benefits by the Development team.
Commercial, financial & resource management
- Uses agreed British Council systems and processes to support the planning and management of budgets as necessary for a range of medium to large projects and programmes
Minimum Essential:
- Proven experience of working at a mid or senior level in an arts/ creative industry context in the UK, and a good network of contacts derived from that. Excellent understanding of the UK culture sector with a particular ability to identify themes, trends and people who are “the ones to watch”.
- Ability to write high-quality technical arts and culture proposals or sections of cross-disciplinary proposals based on strong knowledge and understanding of the arts and culture sector
- Experience devising, commissioning, and managing programmes and projects delivered through third-party organisations
- Ability to demonstrate a variety of examples of international experience of building cultural connections and networks in different contexts with partners in an arts or creative industries context.
- Proven experience of building strong and trusted relationships with ethnically diverse creative professionals and professional networks. Demonstrable experience of building on these relationships to enable arts/creative industry programmes.
Further Information:
Contract – 2-year Fixed term contract
Location – London only with 2 days a week at the Stratford office. There will be flexibility and this can be hybrid with a minimum of 1 day at office.
Pay Band – 8
For externals only : Salary – Upto £ 46,203 plus 3,300 London market allowance
