If you answered yes, our Whiteshell Laboratories (WL) site located near Pinawa, Manitoba is looking for a Waste Characterization Officer (WCO). The WCO is a key member of the Waste Management team and will assume responsibility for Waste Certification processes to inspect and verify that packages are compliant with all applicable regulations and requirements and ensure proper waste handling and processing procedures are being followed. The expansion of the Waste Management department is essential to the success of the WL Restoration Project and the WCO will fulfil a vital role to ensure our waste shipments are executed safely, efficiently and in compliance with regulatory and company-wide requirements. What will you be doing?

· Carrying out waste management quality assurance activities, including implementation of a formal “Waste Certification” process and overseeing waste emplacements into waste containers.

· Providing guidance to Waste Generators regarding waste segregation, characterization and packaging requirements.

· Verifying the contents of waste packages and containers comply with the waste acceptance criteria of the preferred disposition destination.

· Evaluating and coordinating storage and handling of clean, hazardous and/or radiological waste.

· Performing other duties in support of the WL Waste Management Program, including assisting in the development of program documentation and Waste Management Plans.

· Interacting daily, in a collaborative manner, with Waste Generators and decommissioning project teams to build and maintain productive relationships and gain cooperation to achieve common goals.

· Work collaboratively with decommissioning teams and other support organizations, including Environmental Protection, Radiation Protection, Health Physics, General Services, Procurement and Facility Operations.

· Other duties as assigned by manager.

What we are looking for:

Someone who had the ability to:

· Ability/desire to perform field activities in all environmental conditions.

· Experience with radiation and/or hazardous detection instruments and techniques.

· Strong communications skills to influence and educate various audiences including operations staff of various backgrounds, clients, supply chain vendors, peers/colleagues, and management.

· Computer literacy including the use/customization of spreadsheets, databases, and word processing software.

· Demonstrated ability to meet project deadlines, with an ability to manage and prioritize a workload that involves several different projects.

· Ability to gather, analyze and assemble a variety of technical information under firm schedule requirements.

· Excellent computer literacy including the use of spreadsheets, databases, and word processing software.

· Must possess a high level of motivation with a demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment.

· Must possess strong interpersonal and written communications skills.

Experience:

· A minimum of three (3) to five (5) years’ experience in a role related to waste management, environmental characterization, or environmental management.

· Experience with the management of hazardous and/or radiological materials.

· Quality Control / Quality Assurance principles and applications.

Education:

· Post-secondary education (University degree) or College Diploma in a scientific field, or equivalent knowledge earned through a combination of education and relevant experience in the field of radioactive waste characterization.

· Valid Transportation of Dangerous Goods (including Class 7 Materials) Certification and successful completion of the Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Standard (HAZWOPER) training course is considered an asset.

Security Eligibility Requirement:

· Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC) which has a minimum requirement of three (3) years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security”.

Working Conditions:

· The WCO will be designated a Nuclear Energy Worker and will be expected to work in various settings including the laboratory/industrial facility, field and office and must be prepared to work alternate hours pending operational requirements. Work areas may contain a variety of hazardous materials such as acids, caustics, flammable organics, etc., and staff are required to have or take the appropriate training to be competent in working in such an environment.

· The WCO will be expected to spend approximately 65% of their time in the field, working with Waste Generators and other personnel involved in waste management activities. The WCO will be expected to enter work areas to perform field inspections in support of the waste characterization process.

· The WCO will be expected to work in an area where heavy equipment is in operation and must be capable of using ladders to apply labels and signage to waste containers.

· The WCO must be willing to work in a shared office.
