Duties

  • Function as the principal translator for the United States Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM).
  • Provide the full spectrum of translator services for the organization, installation, Department of the Army (DA), Department of Defense (DOD); including other Federal/State government agencies, and International governments and/or organizations.
  • Perform work in translating (speaking, reading, and writing) the Spanish and Portuguese languages and its many dialects (North/Central/South American and the Caribbean Islands) into the English language and vice versa.
  • Participate in the development and/or revision of technical and non-technical glossaries and/or literary works, used both nationally and internationally.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Top Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 20% of the time.
  • Expert knowledge of English, Spanish, and Portuguese is required. This position requires the incumbent to pass the Spanish (Level 3) and Portuguese (Level 2+) Foreign Language Proficiency Test in listening/reading/speaking.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience in translating and interpreting specific information and material from English to Spanish and Portuguese and vice versa. Experience in editing translations and interpretations using correct wording and structure, clarity of expression and correct punctuation in the proper format. Conduct translations and interpretations using both technical and nontechnical vocabulary at formal and semi-formal meetings for selected audiences. Conduct research and analysis of information from different sources in order to obtain a variety of information necessary to perform translator/interpreter duties for areas of responsibility such as North/Central/South Americas and Caribbean Islands. Conduct research to determine the type of meaning in Spanish and Portuguese terminology. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).
