CELT Centre for English Language Teaching is the longest-established private language school in Cardiff with two centres: one for adults and one for juniors aged 13-17. The junior centre runs open enrolment courses in July and August and closed group courses at other times of the year.

We have been accredited by the British Council since 1993 and are members of English UK and English UK Young Learners. We were the first school in Wales to be invited to join Quality English and have been providing English language courses to thousands of satisfied students since 1989.

We are currently looking for a Director of Studies (DoS) to join our management team. The Director of Studies is responsible to the owners of the school who are the Academic Director and the Principal. The Director of Studies will also be working alongside a further Director, who is responsible for academic development including online learning, teacher training, and medical English.

Main responsibilities include:

– Managing the teaching team by encouraging and supporting them to raise and maintain our academic standards
– Assisting in the recruitment of new teachers
– Giving inductions and support to new teachers
– Assisting with in-house training and CPD
– Arranging and chairing teachers meetings
– Observing teachers and ensuring that high teaching standards are maintained
– Reviewing and updating syllabuses, resources, and course materials
– Testing new students, giving them an induction, and assigning them to appropriate classes
– Organising timetables for both teaching and social activities
– Monitoring students progress and ensuring that tutorials are carried out for long-term students
– Managing any behavioural or disciplinary issues
– Liaising with teachers and group leaders to ensure the smooth running of the YL programmes
– Completing all required paperwork and record-keeping
– Providing and/or organising cover for absent teachers
– Acting as CELTs Designated Safeguarding Lead and Child Protection Officer
– Recording and analysing student and staff feedback
– Managing risk assessments for all teaching and social activities

Skills and desirable experience:

– Excellent organisational skills and willingness to lead by example
– Willingness to engage fully with the requirements of the position
– Proven ability to prioritise tasks and remain calm and polite under pressure
– Proficient user of main Microsoft 365 applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.) and Google equivalents (Google Workspace/Docs)
– Willingness to be involved in face-to-face and online teacher training
– Experience in Safeguarding and Child Protection (desirable but not essential)
– An interest in Medical English and OET (desirable but not essential)
– Previous management experience in the field of EFL (desirable but not essential)

This is a full-time, permanent position that requires in-person presence at our teaching centres in Cardiff. Candidates must have a native level of English (C2 minimum).

Successful candidates will be invited to an interview and are advised that references will be requested and followed up. CELT is committed to ensuring the safeguarding and wellbeing of our students and, therefore, reference requests will specifically ask about the candidates suitability to work with under-18s and an enhanced DBS check will be required before the appointment is confirmed. Interviews will start mid-February.

Qualifications

– First degree + TEFLQ (Qualified) status (DELTA/ Dip TESOL, MA in TESOL/ ELT or equivalent)
– 5 years+ post-CELTA teaching experience with both adults and young learners

Expected salary

£29000 – 33000 per year
