We are in search of a dynamic and highly motivated mycologist, with a proven track record in fungal taxonomy, diversity, and systematics, to establish an influential research group. The primary goal is to produce cutting-edge science within the realm of fungal taxonomy and biology, aligning with Kew’s mission as articulated in the Manifesto for Change and the Kew Science Strategy (both available on our website). This position aligns with the initiatives of the Accelerated Taxonomy Priority, including Documenting Biodiversity, The Tree of Life, and Innovating Species Identification.

Additionally, RBG Kew is dedicated to documenting biodiversity in various regions worldwide. This commitment extends to the UK, Brazil, Colombia, Ethiopia, Guinea, Indonesia, Madagascar, Mexico, South Africa, Thailand, and several other countries where we have a rich history of scientific collaboration.

The current focus of mycological research at Kew spans a wide spectrum, encompassing fungal taxonomy and evolution, comparative genomics, functional genetics, fungal-plant interactions, and broader aspects of fungal taxonomy.

The appointed research leader will be responsible for managing independent projects and establishing a dedicated research team. Their focus will be the taxonomic study of fungi utilizing Kew’s exceptional resources, including the Fungarium, Millennium Seed Bank, and the Living Collections. We encourage the application of cutting-edge technologies to analyze fungal diversity, taxonomy, and biology, ensuring our research remains at the forefront of innovation.

Prospective candidates should hold a Ph.D. in fungal biology and possess substantial postdoctoral experience focused on fungal diversity research. A strong publication record and excellent communication skills are essential qualifications. We are particularly interested in candidates who not only have a profound understanding of fungal taxonomy but also with expertise in fungal (phylo)genomics, proficiency in DNA barcoding of fungi, morphological characterization and description of macrofungi, as well as molecular evolutionary and multi-omic analyses. Experience with environmental diagnostics, conservation, or other areas complementary to fungal taxonomy are also welcome.

This role is well-suited for a scientist with experience in managing their own grant-funded research program. Teaching experience will also be considered as an advantage.

The salary will be £43,123 per annum.
