Pay Band – 7 £30,839-£33,995 plus £3,300 London Weighting

Role Purpose
Are you looking for an opportunity to make a positive difference with a global organisation? The British Council, the UK’s international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities, is seeking a talented press officer (Media Manager) to join the UK media team.
Working as part of the British Council’s global Corporate Communications team, you’ll help deliver our media and external communications strategy and promote our reputation through the UK media.
You’ll work on education and arts media/PR campaigns such as our short film series in partnership with BFI, Five films for Freedom, major research projects such as The Future of English and English and Empowerment projects such as English and Digital for Girls’ Education.
You will handle press enquiries and help create audio-visual content to communicate our work in the arts, education and the English language to the widest possible audience. Working closely with our colleagues in digital and marketing, you’ll also contribute content to our website and social media channels.
We’re seeking a hardworking and talented individual with experience of working in a PR, media relations and/or communications setting. You will be creative and proactive, bringing excellent organisational skills to your media engagement. What you will do:
- Develop, deliver and evaluate proactive UK media campaigns on our work in the arts, education and the English language, in support of our communications strategy
- Build and maintain positive relationships with key journalists, ensuring press enquiries are handled effectively
- Contribute to building the organisation’s reputation via the UK media, guiding colleagues on media risks and mitigations
- Provide professional advice to colleagues and external partners with the support of the Senior Media Manager
- Participate in out-of-hours press office as part of rota system (with ‘on call’ allowance)
- Proactively pursue professional development opportunities to enhance your skills and deepen your expertise
What you should have:
- Previous experience in a PR/media relations/communications team
- Experience of developing relationships with journalists and working with them to deliver positive media coverage
- Experience of working with colleagues and partners on media and PR activity in support of announcements, campaigns and projects to ensure we achieve our shared communications objectives
