Purpose of Activity/Assignment:

The main purpose of this assignment is to translate contents of UNICEF Myanmar’s SBC programmatic key messages and contents (messaging to communities, communication tools, training packages, guidelines etc.) from English to Myanmar and vice versa for easily understandable translation by the audiences. The contents of each program will be provided by UNICEF and the consultant needs to perform translations both English and Myanmar versions.

Scope of Work:

  1. Translation of SBC contents (messages to the communities and capacity building materials) from English to Myanmar and vice versa.
  2. Regular translations for SBC unit related to UNICEF programmes such as Immunization, Health, Nutrition, Education, Child Protection, WASH, and Social Policy and Child Right Monitoring.
  3. After completing the translations and double-checking on quality and consistency of the usages and terms, the consultant needs to send translated documents to UNICEF through email.

Responsibilities

  1. Delivery date must be accurate according to the predefined timelines.
  2. On assignment completion, translation documents will be transferred electronically to Social Behaviour Change Officer, UNICEF SBC unit.
  3. Develop contents in English and Myanmar, ensuring language and factual accuracy, clarity, readability, logic, appropriateness, and engaging writing in all products. The final product must not require further editing/copy-editing. Proof-read, including spelling checks, technical terms, names of country’s townships/states/regions as well as acronyms and other abbreviations, style consistency, references, etc.
  4. Flexibility for several rounds of editing, if needed and be available for feedback and inputs as per the requirements of the office. The final products must have high quality translated, edited, and formatted (PDF) contents.

Duration of the Contract:

10.5 months. Delivery-based. Consultant manages his/her own time.

Description of Assignment:

Task 1: Contents translation of SBC contents for UNICEF’s social media channels (Facebook, Viber etc.) and messages for Radios, Mobile phones (English to Myanmar and vice versa) (about 300 pages)

Deliverable 1: Translated document in Word file submitted to UNICEF in high quality translation and consistent usages of terminologies.

Timeline: 60 days

Task 2: Contents translation of SBC training and capacity building materials (English to Myanmar and vice versa) (about 300 pages)

Deliverable 2: Translated document in Word file submitted to UNICEF in high quality translation and consistent usages of terminologies.

Timeline: 30 days

Task 3: Translation of Human-Interest stories, reports etc. (English to Myanmar and vice versa) (about 100 pages)

Deliverable 3: Translated document in Word file submitted to UNICEF in high quality translation and consistent usages of terminologies.

Timeline: 30 days

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have… 

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications or linguistics or development study.
  • Minimum five years of experience as a professional in developmental fields, especially in the field of Social and behaviour change around health, immunization, COVID-19, protection and/or education (OR)
  • Minimum three years of experience as a professional translator on translating document/papers from English to Myanmar and vice versa
  • Must have excellent translation skill in written English and Myanmar language
  • Sound knowledge of working with computers and using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power point)
  • Prior experience of translating document or papers related to developmental programme especially in the field of Social and behaviour change around health, immunization, COVID-19, protection and/or education will be an advantage
  • Familiarity with UNICEF programmes (e.g, Health & Nutrition, Immunization, Emergency health (COVID-19), Education, Child Protection, WASH and Social Policy and Child Right Monitoring will be an advantage
  • Strong command of writing skills in both English and Burmese languages.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Myanmar and its development context.
  • Well organized and structured, good attention for detail.
  • Professional work ethic, integrity, and initiative.
  • Experience of working with UN agencies is a plus
  • Prior sound knowledge and experiences in maternal and child health programmes, immunization, COVID-19 response will be desired.
  • Ability to work under pressure and competing priorities.

Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws. 

The selected candidate is solely responsible to ensure that the visa (applicable) and health insurance required to perform the duties of the contract are valid for the entire period of the contract. Selected candidates are subject to confirmation of fully-vaccinated status against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) with a World Health Organization (WHO)-endorsed vaccine, which must be met prior to taking up the assignment. It does not apply to consultants who will work remotely and are not expected to work on or visit UNICEF premises, programme delivery locations or directly interact with communities UNICEF works with, nor to travel to perform functions for UNICEF for the duration of their consultancy contracts.
