Position Summary

The Business Unit Communication Leader (BUCL) Immunology and Neuroscience position is a key leadership role on the J&J Innovative Medicine North America Communications and Public Affairs team that is responsible for helping to grow the company’s businesses in these foundational categories.

As a dedicated member of the U.S. Immunology business’s leadership team, the BUCL will work directly with the U.S. President of Immunology, Vice President of Medical Affairs, and Vice Presidents of Marketing and Sales for its franchises, to help set the overall direction and success of the business, and to ensure communications are consistent with the leadership team’s priorities. (The Director of Communications, Neuroscience, who reports to the BUCL, serves on the Neuroscience leadership team to ensure dedicated leadership for the organization, as well as strong career development opportunities.)

The BUCL will also take on a broader leadership role within the North American Americas Communications and Public Affairs team and helps in setting the direction of the entire 50-person organization. This includes ensuring the team is in strategic alignment with the company’s full enterprise strategy, maintains a strong culture, and is a string leadership role model in support of career development.

Primary Responsibilities

  • The BUCL leads and inspires a diverse and talented team of more than 10 communications team members dedicated to the U.S. Immunology and Neuroscience businesses, supported by PR agencies and contract support as well.
  • Ongoing, proactive, and thoughtful assessments of the communications, public affairs and priorities and issues, and requires deep knowledge of the pharmaceutical and healthcare industry and knowledge of key trends affecting the industry.
  • Oversee the teams in managing product communication strategies in support of the U.S. business, including professional and direct-to-patient communication efforts, media and social media relations, issues management, public policy and access, and ensures that our overall communication efforts enhance our leadership reputation in alignment with our global strategy for innovation and growth.
  • The BUCL also holds a broader leadership role within the J&J Innovative Medicines North American Americas Communications and Public Affairs team, which is charged with setting the direction of the entire organization, from strategic alignment with the company’s full enterprise strategy as well as for talent development and team-culture.

Qualifications

Required

  • Experience managing high profile Company and/or product brands, as well as issues management.
  • 10+ years of experience in managing public relations/public affairs in a company, NGO, government agency or public relations agency.
  • Successful track record of team development and leadership experience and strong partnering skills with peers and business leaders.
  • Direct health care product/pharmaceutical product experience is required and while experience in the immunology and/or neuroscience industry business segment is preferred, it is not essential.
  • Public affairs and advocacy experience, particularly in healthcare, a plus.
  • Experience working with investor relations teams and other functional areas is essential to success in this role.
  • Excellent working knowledge of news and social media.
  • Previous experience in working with and managing consultants and contractors.
  • Bachelor’s degree in liberal arts, business or related discipline; Master’s degree preferred

Salary

The base pay range for this position is $160,000 – $276,000 USD

Bonus

The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable plan. The annual performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding for individual and the corporation’s performance over a calendar/ performance year. Bonuses are awarded at the Company’s discretion on an individual basis.

Employees are eligible for the following time off benefits:

  • Vacation – up to 120 hours per calendar year
  • Sick time – up to 40 hours per calendar year; for employees who reside in the State of Washington – up to 56 hours per calendar year
  • Holiday pay, including Floating Holidays – up to 13 days per calendar year
  • Work, Personal and Family Time – up to 40 hours per calendar year
