The University of Edinburgh’s Information Services Group (ISG) invites applications from undergraduate students who are interested in working over the summer as Resource Lists Interns, to set up and review Resource Lists. The 4 successful students will join ISG’s Library Learning Services team who are responsible for building and reviewing Resource Lists and providing help and guidance to course organisers. The Library Learnings Services team work closely with the E-reserve team, who provide copyright compliant scans for use in teaching, and with the Acquisitions Team.
The key purpose of this role is to quality check, create, and review online Resource Lists. You will gain practical experience in using the Resource List software, ‘Leganto’, and the Library Management system ‘Alma’. You will learn how the library manages the provision of teaching materials whilst gaining an understanding of copyright legislation. This creates an exciting opportunity for you to develop a range of transferable skills, including teamwork, and the ability to follow complex guidelines and processes, whilst also strengthening your research and information literacy skills.
The pay for this internship is UE03 £12.04 per hour, plus £2.18 per hour holiday pay, and is expected to start on the 24th of June 2024, lasting 10 weeks. You will likely work 35 hours per week for the duration of the internship, between Monday to Friday (9am to 5pm). You will be paid a month in arrears during this internship, meaning your first payment date covering hours worked in June will be the 26th of July 2024. We anticipate this internship will have a hybrid working pattern, where you will work in the Main Library at least two days per week and from home, depending on your preference.
Duties and responsibilities
- Building and reviewing Resource Lists following complex Library guidelines and Course Organiser instructions
- Checking the availability of books, e-books, journal articles and other materials under DiscoverEd
- Searching for suitable online content and checking and updating links
- Processing purchase and scan requests using the Library Management System, Alma
- Liaising with other Collections Teams to resolve issues with resources
- Ensuring that scans uploaded to Resource Lists are copyright compliant.
Skills and experience
Essential Criteria
- A current University of Edinburgh undergraduate student (you must be a matriculated student for the duration of your employment). Internships are open to all undergraduate students, except those in their final year of study
- Based in the UK for the duration of the internship, and able to commit to working on-campus in Edinburgh as and when required (we cannot accommodate individuals working overseas due to tax and legal implications)
- A good working knowledge of Library search tools, such as DiscoverEd, Library databases and online journals to find resources for research and study
- Evidence of a conscientious and accurate approach to work with excellent attention to detail
- Proven ability to follow complex guidelines and policy documentation
- Good general level of IT and information skills, and the ability to quickly learn and use new systems
- Proven ability to manage time effectively to meet deadlines.
Location
Hybrid Working Pattern to be agreed with line manager. Working both from home, and on-campus in the Main Library
