NHS Scotland
Job title:
ScotGEM Generalist Clinical Mentor (2nd year)
Company
NHS Scotland
Job description
We are seeking an enthusiastic GP, with an interest in medical education, to provide support to the Scottish Graduate Entry Medicine course (ScotGEM) in Dumfries and Galloway. ScotGEM is an innovative graduate entry medical programme, employing a case based approach to learning. It is a 4-year course that was commissioned by the Scottish Government with a specific remit to widen access to medicine and promote generalist careers in under-served, especially rural areas. The universities of St. Andrews and Dundee are leading this in conjunction with the University of Highlands and Islands, NHS Boards in Dumfries & Galloway, Fife, Tayside and Highland. The course has been running for 6 years and has successfully graduated 2 cohorts of students.
A key part of the ScotGEM course is the Generalist Clinical Mentor, (GCM) day. During this day a group of between 6-8 students would join the GCM in their practice to gain a clinical context for that week’s case based learning. This may involve meeting patient’s with a specific condition relevant to that weeks learning, spending time with other members of the MDT or third sector organisations relevant to that week’s learning as well as having tutorial time with the GCM. A flipped classroom technique is also used where GCMs would facilitate students teaching each other some of the learning objectives for that week. Students and GCMs have found this a very rewarding teaching environment which exemplifies the role of the GP as a medical generalist and educator.
Host GP practices would be approved by the ScotGEM programme and would receive a £5000 payment for hosting ScotGEM students for the year. Suitable practices would have an available teaching room for students to meet in and access to a clinical space for 1 session of the GCM day. Successful applicants would require to be working within the host GP practice. Current regional arrangements allow for the practice to pay for 1 session of the time and be reimbursed for one further session of the successful candidate’s clinical time at the Associate Adviser pay rates.
Applications are welcomed both from new and existing local GPs.
Dumfries and Galloway is a friendly rural region with good housing, schools and links to Carlisle, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Belfast.
