Reporting to Executive Director, Purpose/ESG Communications, the Associate Director, Corporate Philanthropy & BMS Foundation Communications, drives the development and implementation of strategic communications plans that promote BMS’ commitment to health equity and BMS Foundation, an independent charitable organization that advances health equity for underserved populations around the world.

This role is responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive communications strategy that demonstrates our intentional approach to company’s driving health equity via charitable giving, volunteerism, and community engagement efforts, inclusive of the work through the BMS Foundation. This person will work closely with our internal functions to ensure the communications strategy is reflected in our corporate priorities and reflects the value that BMS and the BMS Foundation places on health equity.

In this role, the individual will be accountable for building strong internal and external relationships with key partners and monitoring current events to understand how we can best communicate about our role to support differentiated philanthropic efforts in earned, owned, digital and paid media. The leader in this position will be responsible for shaping our corporate philanthropy narrative as well as the BMS Foundation narrative and creating an integrated communications plan to differentiate BMS among its peers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute a strategic communications plan to position BMS and the BMS Foundation as industry leaders and partners of choice in driving innovative solutions through our health equity/corporate philanthropy and BMS Foundation work.
  • Craft corporate philanthropy and BMS Foundation messages/storylines and create a multi-channel communications strategy that proactively engages key internal and external audiences through media relations, multimedia, social media and events.
  • Partner with Purpose/ESG communications colleagues and broader team members to execute overarching ESG communications plan in support of our ESG strategy; ensure corporate philanthropy and BMS Foundation work is integrated into the overall ESG communications plan and approach.
  • In partnership with other functions, guide the creation of region-/country-specific presentations and narratives that demonstrate the impact of BMS’ unique corporate philanthropy and BMS Foundation initiatives and the roles that BMS and the BMS Foundation play in the broader healthcare landscape. Increase visibility of our corporate philanthropy and BMS Foundation initiatives through strategic thought-leadership activities, including speaking opportunities, media interviews, social/digital content, sponsorships, partnerships, digital activations and key relationships.
  • Counsel and prepare senior executives including BMS Foundation leadership; media train/message prep them for internal and external engagements.
  • Develop collateral materials including website content, fact sheets, message maps, briefings and presentations, among others.
  • Work closely across Corporate Affairs, Corporate Giving and the BMS Foundation teams on the philanthropic communications strategy and engagement, issues management and corporate positioning with a focus on corporate giving, community engagement, private foundations and related communications. Must be able to navigate a complex matrix organization and be able to engage with subject matter experts at various levels across BMS.
  • Coordinate, gather and collate local, regional and global initiatives supporting our health equity and BMS Foundation grantmaking efforts for inclusion in various communication materials, including the annual ESG Report.
  • Drive employee engagement and communications, in partnership with HR, to reinforce how our approach to health equity and corporate philanthropy supports employee engagement and business outcomes. Help create internal campaigns to shape our culture and help inspire our people.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required, ideally in Communications, Journalism, or a related field. Master’s degree is a plus.
  • 8+ years progressive experience in communications and/or public relations with a focus on health equity, corporate social responsibility, ESG, philanthropy or private foundations.
  • Proven ability to effectively collaborate with and influence stakeholders at all levels, internal and external, through exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated track record of driving successful communications strategies in a global, matrixed organization focused on health equity, corporate philanthropy and private foundations.
  • Expertise in building integrated communications plans and programs for internal, external and stakeholder audiences, and driving outcomes across various communications channels.
  • Excellent writing and content creation skills required; able to quickly produce clear, compelling, motivating communications. Strong grasp of storytelling.
  • Fluency with an array ESG indices including Global Reporting Initiative, Sustainability Accounting and Standards, Dow Jones Sustainability Index, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, specifically as it related to philanthropic work is a plus.
  • Establish KPIs, track effectiveness of communications tactics, report results and adapt strategies, as needed. Ability to translate complex ideas gleaned from analyses into clear, compelling, and actionable insights through written narrative.
  • Calm and cool under pressure. Attention to detail is critical.
  • Strong, reliable judgement in handling sensitive content.
  • Proven ability to think strategically, listen and learn proactively, take initiative, and constantly seek ways to innovate and do things better.
  • Able to inspire trust, clarity, and consensus within a complex, fast-paced and changing environment.
