Our route contains the West Coast main line which stretches over 1,000 miles of track and has 64 passenger stations. It’s also the busiest mixed-use railway in Europe, forming Anglo-Scottish journeys between London, Glasgow and Edinburgh, as well as providing commuter links to the capital through Hertfordshire, Northamptonshire, and Buckinghamshire.The West Coast main line was electrified in the 1960s, allowing for longer, faster train services for passengers and freight. This meant that London Euston Station has to be rebuilt to create space for the new overhead equipment and was the first station in London to provide express passenger journeys to distant cities.Brief DescriptionWe have a fantastic opportunity for someone looking to either develop their Commercial career path or enter into the world of Commercial.As a Commercial Manager, you will provide a dedicated pre and post-contract commercial management service for one of the Maintenance Delivery Units in the West Coast South Route.The Maintenance Delivery Units carry out critical maintenance work to keep the railway running, simply put without it, the railway couldn’t operate safely. The Maintenance Delivery Units rely on their supply chain to maintain the railway, it is important they are supported and that the supplier contracts they engage with are operated and administered properly to ensure continual service.Its busy, its reactive, its challenging, no two days are the same, we operate in a hard working, but friendly and approachable culture.We are not necessarily looking for just qualified Quantity Surveyors’s, finance or contract experts. We are looking for people with· Experience of dealing with suppliers.· Those that can see a good value for money opportunity,· Those that have good numerical skills, can analyse data and identify areas of expenditure.· We want someone who thinks rationally· Most importantly someone with a good attitude, hard work ethic and a desire to learn.The technical experience and qualifications are not an issue, as we will provide the skills and training to do the role. We have successfully employed a number of people from “non-commercial” backgrounds and they have been a success in our team.Please note, this is a 12 month fixed term/secondment opportunityAbout the role (External)Some key responsibilities of the role1. The role will be based within the relevant Delivery Unit. The responsibilities are varied from pre contract procurement, post contract administration to financial review. The following is some of the key activities that the Commercial Manager would engage in.2. Liaising with the relevant DU Maintenance teams to understanding the overall workbank and identify where we can deliver a best value for money service from our supply chain.3. Manage the assessment and valuation of supplier’s payment applications.4. Governance and assurance of suppliers in relation to their performance, KPI’s and timesheets5. Regularly meeting key suppliers and stakeholders to ensure performance is up to standard and agree any outstanding contractual matters (such as inflationary issues).6. Day to day and reactive commercial management to ad hoc issues such as unexpected variations, claims, negotiation of disputed items, supplier queries and managing corporate governance.7. Data gathering of all cost implications incurred as a result of supplier performance.8. Supplier cost reporting for the DU to analyse data and trends of expenditureIn order to be successful in this role, we would like you to have/to be:· Experience in dealing with suppliers.· Good numerical skills.· Understanding how value for money is to be sought.· An eye for detail.· Good attitude, hard work ethic and a desire to learn.· Good understanding of the construction/railway industry.· Rational thinking and considered decision making skills· Negotiation skills.How to apply (External)We are a Disability Confident Leader and want to make the most of the skills and talents disabled people bring to the workplace – skills and talents we need in our businessSalary and benefits:· Salary: Starting at £43,588 and raising to £49,037
