Faculty of History, George Street, OX1 2RLAbout the roleThis is an exciting opportunity to join the Faculty of History as the Departmental Lecturer in Global and Imperial History for a fixed term of one year. The appointee will primarily lecture and teach undergraduate and graduate students, and will also engage in advanced study and conduct independent research within the Faculty of History, University of Oxford, George Street, Oxford.The RoleThe appointee will organise and contribute to courses in Global and Imperial History at undergraduate and Masters level, including teaching on the MSt Global and Imperial History, and for the DPhil training seminar in Global and Imperial History, as well as preparing and delivering their own MSt option paper. The appointee will be expected to help cover teaching and supervision specifically with a focus on British Imperial History due to the retirement of Professor Jamie Belich, Beit Professor of Global and Imperial History, at the end of this academic year (2023-24).The successful candidate will undertake advanced academic study to underpin lectures and class teaching, take a lead role in organising the Hilary Term MSt and DPhil student presentations and produce lecture notes, course materials, reading lists, and reference guides. They will also be the first contact for student matters relating to attendance, conduct, coursework, performance, and welfare (referring matters to appropriate others), and will organise specific areas of the syllabus relating to global and imperial history at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including the Masters course in Global History.About youYou will possess a completed doctorate in a relevant field, or have evidence that a doctorate is close to completion, as well as sufficient depth and breadth of knowledge in the subject to develop course materials and research proposals. You will have an aptitude for teaching, the ability to enthuse and inspire students and some experience of contributing to courses on the methodology and historiography of Global and Imperial History; knowledge or interest in the history of the British empire, as well as knowledge of one or more of the following fields: global history, the history of empire, and related regional histories.
