Post-Doctoral Fellow in LCA of Electricity Generation & StorageTracking Code: req1109Faculty of Engineering and Applied ScienceNumber of Positions: 1Appointment Type: Limited TermSalary Grade: Administered in accordance with the Collective AgreementPosting Date: May 13, 2024Closing Date: May 27, 2024Researchers at Ontario Tech University in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada, seek a Postdoctoral Fellow to support a research project focused on the life cycle analysis of solar, wind, small modular reactor (SMR) and battery storage technologies. The position is offered for 12 months, beginning June 1, 2024, subject to funding approval.The Fellow will be jointly supervised by the project research team: Jennifer McKellar, Kirk Atkinson, and Xianke Lin, Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science.Ontario Tech is home to the Brilliant Energy Institute (BEI; https://research.ontariotechu.ca//discover-research/brilliant-energy-institute.php) and the Centre for Small Modular Reactors (CSMR). As well, Ontario Tech is an International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Collaborating Centre.Responsibilities/Accountabilities:The successful candidate will contribute to the completion of LCA and LCC analyses. They will take a lead role in the data collection and interpretation phases of the analyses, and assist with project management. They will also likely assist in the training of graduate students in LCA/LCC.The successful candidate will be expected to prepare written reports for the industry partner, and give oral presentations on progress. They will also collaborate on the preparation of manuscripts for publication, and present research results at relevant conferences.Required Skills

  • Experience in LCA, LCC and/or energy systems is required. Experience in LCA is strongly preferred, while experience with LCA software would be an asset
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral; a proven publication record would be an asset
  • Strong project management skills, including the ability to meet deadlines
  • Familiarity with one or more of these specific technologies, would be an asset: Solar PV, wind, SMRs, batteries
  • Teaching experience, including as a teaching assistant, is an asset
  • Familiarity with Ontario and Canada would be an asset, to support the research scope

Education

  • PhD in science or engineering, completed within the last 3 years

Position/location

  • The Fellowship is a full-time, one-year position.
  • The Fellow will be expected to work on-campus in Oshawa, Ontario.

Required Experience

  • Experience in LCA, LCC and/or energy systems is required
  • Candidate must be eligible to have access to export-controlled nuclear information from the United States
  • The following would be assets:

– Experience using commercial LCA software;
– Familiarity with one or more of: solar, wind, SMRs, batteries; and,
– Teaching experience.This position falls within the bargaining unit represented by the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) and will be subject to the terms and conditions of the collective agreement between the University and PSAC.
