Job description

The Department of English seeks to appoint a Lecturer in English for a fixed term of one year, commencing in September 2024. The ideal candidate for this post will be a researcher in an area which helps us to develop further current strengths and will be able to evidence their capacity to produce research outputs which meet the quality threshold for REF submission. They will have experience of teaching any area of English, including Creative Writing and Publishing, within a University context.The Department of English at Manchester Met is now ranked 8th of 92 English Language and Literature subject groups in the UK for Research Power, and equal 25th for Quality, with Cambridge and St Andrews. We are the highest-ranked New University Department in the global QS rankings, have won a Queens Anniversary Award for Higher Education, and currently award an annual Fulbright Scholarship for Creative Writing. UG recruitment to the Department’s Literature, Creative Writing and Film and Media Studies programmes is consistently strong. Our MA programmes in English Studies, Creative Writing and Publishing have expanded significantly in recent years and have a current population of more than 220 students. Manchester Met is a founding partner in the organisation which coordinates Manchester’s UNESCO City of Literature’s network and projects and in 2021 we opened the UK’s fourth dedicated Poetry Library, and the only one to be located in a University.There is a thriving collaborative and interdisciplinary research culture at Manchester Met, both within and beyond the faculty of Arts and Humanities, which is also home to the Manchester Schools of Art, Theatre and Writing, and opened its new School of Digital Arts (SODA) in 2021, presenting many opportunities for collaboration in research and education. The Department is home to established and sector-leading research groups in Poetry, Gothic Studies, Games Studies and Place Writing.All candidates will be expected to have a doctoral level qualification in a relevant area, and to have a track record of publishing high quality creative research outputs which meet the quality threshold for submission to the Research Excellence Framework.
