Together we are more than 5,000 dedicated faculty, librarians and staff supporting the University of Victoria’s diverse academic programs, world-class research and commitment to civic engagement.The salary range for this position is:Recruitment range: $98,310 – $122,886 maximum starting salary is determined through knowledge, experience and internal equity.Performance range: starting salary to max of $141,321 is available through annual performance increases.An employee in this classification is excluded from the bargaining unit as defined in the Labour Relations Code.*This position is eligible for a Hybrid Work Arrangement*Job SummaryMandate or core purpose of role:The Associate Director (AD) is key member of a small, highly visible team, and is responsible for the implementation of a comprehensive outreach program that is driven by UVic’s academic, research and service priorities, engaging with provincial and federal governments the post-secondary sector and other partners and organizations to advance collaborative opportunities, policy, and resources in support of the University’s objectives.A key priority for this position is advancing UVic’s strategic objectives related to energy and climate while ensuring a high degree of integration across the university. The Associate Director, working with the CGR and ACET core team will contribute to the development and implementation of purposeful institutional relationships and provide advice to potential internal partners regarding current and emerging community, corporate and government engagement opportunities in the energy policy environment. In particular, the Associate Director will liaise with government as well as corporate partners (both for-profit organizations and not-for-profit industry, as well as NGOs), facilitate knowledge transfer to policy makers, and help ACET to amplify research knowledge mobilization and researchers’ connections. They will remain agile to react quickly to changing institutional (e.g., research) needs and external political and corporate environments.Summary of roles, functions, and areas of focus:Jointly reporting to the UVic Executive Director, Community & Government Relations and in collaboration with the ACET Director of Partnerships & Engagement, the Associate Director will manage multi-faceted portfolios of institutional relationships by representing the University, advocating to government, participating in dialogues, facilitating consultations, supporting new and ongoing partnership initiatives with industry and others, negotiating deliverables and monitoring outcomes.The Associate Director will bridge the relationship between ACET and CGR to maximize research impact and knowledge mobilization, as well as co-creation of knowledge in ACET Projects. In collaboration with ACET researchers, the candidate fosters linkages with decision and policy makers to advance and inform research activities, advises on relevant policy issues, develops strategic communication and advocacy plans. They will research, analyze, and examine government and community issues, manage reviews, prepare reports and briefing notes, and pro-actively initiate and direct engagement activity in the community.The Associate Director will provide strategic guidance and support to the broader University community through their specialized expertise and knowledge of government, community and industry interests and activities, and effectively assess and administer collaborative initiatives to advance the goals, objectives, and directions of ACET’s strategic institutional relationships.Job RequirementsQualifications and experience:
- A graduate degree (or equivalent combination of education and experience) in a related field (e.g., public relations, political science, government, public administration, social policy, business studies, management, languages, or law) is required with a minimum of five years’ experience in a university, community, or government organization.
- Proven leadership abilities and a record of accomplishment of building beneficial, constructive working relationships with various partners.
- Strong research, critical thinking and analytical abilities, excellent problem analysis and problem-solving skills.
- Experience presenting complex issues and opportunities to high-level officials and third-party partners.

- Exceptional interpersonal skills, judgement and tact discretion, diplomacy, discernment, and confidentiality. Ability to engender trust, respect from others, and maintain positive relationships with multiple stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to independently organize workload in a client-focused environment that may include high volume, frequent interruptions, multiple tasks and shifting priorities and deadlines.
- Superior presenting and communication skills. Strong proficiency with information/communication technologies (social media/web searches/email/word processing/spreadsheets).
- An ability to actively collaborate with others to produce desired results in a supportive environment in both individual and team-based work.
- Ability to adapt to changing circumstances, consider various courses of action, understand implications of alternatives, and recommend next steps.
- Sound knowledge of the complex ways in which effective community and government relationships contribute to the achievement of a research university’s mission and goals.
- A working knowledge of municipal, provincial, and federal government organizational structures, priorities, and protocols, and/or understanding of community based cultural, economic, or social associations, organizations, and NGO’s.
- Understanding of Canada’s political system(s), including the legislative, executive, and judicial branches.
- French is an asset.
