Context:The Victory Garden Institute is a Food & Agriculture Education Program aimed at equipping individuals with practical skills for growing food sustainably. The program offers a comprehensive curriculum that ranges from civic engagement and garden planning to advanced principles of climate-smart agriculture and agri-technology solutions. Inspired by the British Dig for Victory Campaign, the program also includes historical perspectives on food security, rationing, transportation, and entrepreneurship.The focus of this research project is to explore the historical food rations promoted during World War I and World War II as part of the British Dig for Victory Campaign. This research will serve as the foundational content for a modern “Food Rationing Module” aimed at promoting healthy eating habits in contemporary society.The research on historical British food rationing during World War I and World War II provides valuable insights into sustainable food practices under constrained resources. By understanding how past societies successfully managed food scarcity and promoted equitable distribution, the Climate Smart Victory Garden can incorporate these strategies to enhance its educational program. This historical perspective will enrich the curriculum, offering practical examples of resilience and resourcefulness that are directly applicable to modern sustainable agriculture.Task type:Teaching, Training and MentorshipTask description:We are looking for 2 Online Volunteers who have experience in research with excellent investigation skills. The task will include the following responsibilities:-Historical Analysis of British Dig for Victory Food Rationing Campaign
-Comparative Analysis of Historical and Modern Rationing
– Identify and gather sources for Application in Modern Education
– Conduct research
– Write a report on findings (see workload belowThe workload estimate will include:
1) Literature Review of existing literature on the British Dig for Victory Campaign and related food rationing practices during World War I and World War II. This would include reviewing historical documents, government reports, and archival materials related to wartime food rationing.
2) Data Collection on the types on the types and quantities of food rations distributed during the wartime periods. Gather information on the nutritional content and health outcomes associated with these rations. Additionally conduct interviews with historians, nutritionists, and individuals who experienced wartime rationing (where possible). Collect oral histories to provide personal insights and anecdotal evidence on the impact of food rationing.
3) Analysis: Analyze the collected data to identify key themes and lessons from historical food rationing practices. Compare historical practices with current food security challenges and dietary recommendationsThe average estimated workload is expected to include roughly reviewing 35-50 documents over the course of the assignment duration. The final pages should be about 10 -15 pages, plus any comparison charts, resource links. This research will be used as a foundational document for the Food Rationing Education module
The Online Volunteer/s will have the opportunity to build connections with the Global Climate Smart Youth Network Virtual Academy.Requirements:The ideal candidates must have professional research skills that can analyze the data for the historic and modern comparisons. A good understanding of Agriculture, community development and lesson plan is also a required.Being fluent in English is a must in order to summarize the findings.We are seeking volunteers who are highly motivated and are able to complete the work after discussions and support are given.Work Hours: 11 – 15
