Together we are working with Nova Scotians to build a better future through sustainable natural resource management as we all benefit from the natural health and wealth of the province.About Our OpportunityAs the Regional Services IRM Specialist (Forester 3), you will work within a multi-disciplinary Integrated Resource Management (IRM) planning team, providing expert advice to department Senior Management, Directors, Managers, Area Supervisors regarding provincial and regional Crown land requests. You will liaison and provide advice to other government departments, municipal units and community groups and may participate on community, interdepartmental and intergovernmental committees.Primary AccountabilitiesSome of the primary accountabilities in the role include:

  • Managing a program related to Crown land access and use activities including reviewing permit applications, coordinating feedback from other government resource professionals and compiling recommendations for senior management.
  • Developing effective long-range policies, programs, procedures, and standards by maintaining information systems, evaluating program effectiveness, and preparing policy proposals and management strategies.
  • Compiling and analyzing detailed inventory of resource information, deriving updating maps, writing analytical reports, Ministerial briefing notes, and preparing documentation outlining resource related land use issues, existing land uses and interests.
  • Maintaining frequent contact with industry, media, and other government and non-government organizations. Advising, designing, and implementing public information seminars, open houses, field days, industry information seminars, public education workshops.
  • Support regional external partnerships to government related to private woodland use and management as well as outreach programs such as “Woodlot Owner of the Year.”

Qualifications and ExperienceThis may be the right opportunity for you if you have a Bachelor’s Degree in any Natural Science, along with six years of related experience. A Masters in a Natural Science field and four years related experience would be considered an asset.You have knowledge of:

  • National, provincial, and regional forestry issues and topics.
  • Computer software used in land use planning, including GIS software, data management and communications.
  • Resource management principles, practices, objectives, policies, and procedures as well as Federal and Provincial regulations concerning Natural Resources.

You demonstrate:

  • Expertise and are capable of responding to diverse situations requiring a broad knowledge of land use practices and principles as well as forestry, mining, coastal and wildlife policies, regulations and guidelines.
  • Ability to undertake projects independently based on instructions given in broad outline form, with minimal direction and supervision and often under very stringent time constraints.
  • Supervisory, project management and public communication (written/verbal) skills.
  • You possess strong communication (written/verbal) skills to communicate effectively with co-workers in multiple disciples and forestry professionals with a variety of specialization and expertise, industry clients, NGO’s, youth and public on many complex topics.
