DescriptionThe Food Bank Coordinator is responsible for the oversight and coordination of the Food Bank (food procurement, donation management, purchasing and re-packaging). Planning and supervision will include relevant volunteers and the development and maintenance of community contacts, partners, and collaborators. The Food Bank Coordinator will actively work to keep volunteers informed and up to date regarding area services as well as promoting a holistic approach to client service.KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:Operations/Programming
- Actively promote a positive environment across all programs, ensuring all individuals (volunteers and participants) are treated with dignity, courtesy, and respect.
- Oversee and coordinate all food bank operations – not limited to coordinating food procurement, receipt of donations, re-packaging for the Food Bank.
- Have input on new Community and Family Services ministry programming as needed to ensure ministry unit objectives are accomplished.
- Network and liaise on behalf of clients with referral agencies and/or other community sources as required; participate at community meetings as directed.
- Assist clients in connecting with internal programs as well as local external services, agencies, and support.
- Responsible for making sure any concerns with maintenance and general cleanliness of the Food Bank are forwarded to Ministry Unit Leader.
- Assist the Ministry Unit Leader with ongoing strategic planning to ensure programming reflects client need as these may evolve in our changing socioeconomic climate.
- Serve as a resource person to the Corps Officer in matters of community relations and media as related to the Community and Family Services.
- Develop and maintain a good understanding of services provided by external agencies.
- Support will be required where applicable for seasonal programs provided by the Community and Family Services and the ministry of all Fort Erie Outreach programs as needed, this may include providing support in the absence of the Community Program Coordinator; the scope of this support will be determined by Ministry Unit Leader and will evolve as programming changes over time.
Administration and Property
- Maintain accurate records of client information in Link2Feed and on The Salvation Army’s computer system while maintaining confidentiality.
- Perform general office duties such as answers telephone, direct enquiries, and answer inquiries; greet visitors and direct them to the appropriate person(s); file documents electronically or manually.
- Helps with processing out-going mail including courier parcels assist with the daily mail opening and distributes as required.
- Maintain databases (e.g., contact lists, inventory); input into Salvation Army Management Information System (S.A.M.I.S).
Supervision
- Recruit, support, assist, train, and schedule, students, and volunteers; demonstrate work methods and ensure that all participants work together to achieve the purpose of the organization and enhance the ministries of The Salvation Army.
- Coordinate safe food handler training for certified volunteers.
- Provide oversight to the social service co-op students and qualified volunteers who administer the initial intake application for food Bank services, and screen clients for general emergency assistance, including food, clothing household needs, referrals etc.
Health and Safety
- Ensure that the Community & Family Services and Food Bank area is tidy in relation to appearance, condition and safety as recommended by Public Health etc.
- Seek out continual education in food safety and health standards, including maintaining Safe Food Handling Certification
- Monitor safety practices in compliance with health and safety standards, and prepare, submit, and act on incident reports; provide calming intervention as required ensuring the safety of everyone.
- May perform workplace inspections as required.
- Assist in the orientation regarding health and safety procedures where required.
- Responsible to report any serious health and safety infractions or problems in accordance with policies to the Ministry Unit Leader.
- Ensure the Community and Family Services Department is cleaned regularly according to acceptable health standards and that physical property is maintained, arranging for repairs as necessary.
- Responsible to report any safety hazards, maintenance problems, equipment, or supply needs to the Ministry Unit Leader.
- Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
Perform other related duties as required.WORKING CONDITIONS:
- This is a regular full-time position based on 35 hours per week.
- Flexibility in scheduling is required, some evening and Saturday work may be required.
- The Supervisor will set the hours of work and work schedule.
- Working environment is typically in the office in generally agreeable conditions.
- This job requires repetitive reaching, bending, and stooping frequently, working in a sitting, and standing position for periods of time.
- High physical effort required to lift/move/carry/hand bomb material weighing up to 40 lbs. (18.1437 kgs) repetitively and frequently during day-to-day operations without assistance from others.
- Work may expose incumbent to disagreeable/angry clients which may require conflict resolution.
- Occasional travel (10%) is associated with this position, will be required to use a program vehicle at times.
Normal work schedule: Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and includes a ½ hour unpaid meal break. Hours of operation are subject to change.QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Completion of a diploma from a recognized institution in Social Services, Business Administration, or related field.
- Current, valid Safe Food Handling Certification or willingness to obtain.
- Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License, own vehicle, and insurance, provide an original copy of current driver’s abstract for review and verification that it satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.
- Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:
- Minimum of two (2) years of prior related experience including experience working with multi-barriered persons, individuals with mental health issues, and a variety of social service programs; with some supervisory experience.
- Knowledge of community-based resources and experience networking with government and social service agencies.
SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:
- Proficient in working in a computerized environment; must demonstrate strong skills using Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel, and Power Point.
- Sensitivity, awareness, and understanding of client’s needs, problems, interests, skills, deficiencies, and idiosyncrasies.
- Demonstrate a high level of integrity, good judgment and ability to maintain appropriate confidentiality.
- Ability to coordinate and train others in reprocessing of food; ability to estimate food needs in advance, maintain inventories and order/ purchase sufficient food items.
