The role is responsible for helping the Arts & Science research community build and expand collaborative research partnerships with private, government, and NGO sector partners – primarily working with and supporting the research programs of faculty members in STEM fields. The focus of the position is to identify areas of common research interests, to cultivate and facilitate the development of new research relationships, and solicit company, government, and community organization support and collaboration on major research projects and programs across Units in Arts & Science.The Research Partnership & Business Development Officer will report to the Director of Research Services and the focus of their work will be directed by the Dean, Vice-Dean Research & Infrastructure for the Faculty of Arts & Science, Department Chairs, Centre and Institute Directors, and Arts & Science faculty members. The incumbent will also work in close partnership with members of the A&S Research Services team and other teams across Arts & Science (inclusive of Experiential Learning and Outreach Services and the Advancement team) to ensure the Faculty advances a coordinated approach to Partnership building, which maximizes opportunities for growing sponsored research partnerships. Coordination and collaboration with Business and Partnership Development specialists in the Offices of the Vice President Research & Innovation, Vice President International, and within other UofT Divisions on outreach to and partnership with industry, government, and NGOs is also required.Your responsibilities will include:

  • Developing marketing and partnership plans that support research needs and objectives
  • Delivering presentations to promote programs, opportunities and/or initiatives
  • Developing and Implementing plans to support areas of research relevant to industry needs that are consistent with the University’s academic mission
  • Building and strengthening relationships with stakeholders and partners of strategic importance
  • Identifying, developing and executing strategies for research and development collaborations
  • Producing detailed statistical report and analysis on facilities utilization, planning and revenue generation/spending to support decision making
  • Settling partnership agreements and contract terms
  • Tracking the status of business development initiatives, activities and outcomes

Essential Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree (preferably in a STEM discipline), or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum five (5) years of relevant experience in an academic or industry research environment.
  • Experience identifying, attracting and retaining major research partnerships with private, government and/or NGO sector partners.
  • Demonstrated experience developing measurable short-term and long-range goals and strategies to support a partner cultivation plan that emphasizes growth in key applied-research areas.
  • Knowledge of commercial research opportunities within Canada and internationally.
  • Expert understanding of Provincial, Canadian and International partnership-based research funding programs, in particular major industry partnership projects led by university researchers. i.e. funded through Mitacs, Ontario Research Fund, the NSERC Alliance Suite of Programs, and the NFRF suite of programs.
  • Experience organizing and facilitating workshops and training sessions.
  • Advanced computer skills (e.g. Excel, Access, Word, Power point).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, negotiating, and marketing skills.
  • Exceptional research and report writing skills.

Assets (Nonessential):

  • PhD in an Arts & Science discipline (preferably within a STEM field)

Pay Scale Group & Hiring Zone:
USW Pay Band 15 — $93,752 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $119,892. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
