Contract: PermanentSalary: £33,738 – £36,467Hours: 40Here at Serco, we are looking for a Vocational Multi Skills Instructor with a construction industry background to join our team at HMP Dovegate a category B prison. Occupational Experience is as important as tutor qualifications.The main aim of the role is to participate in the daily operations of the industries building and the workshops/classrooms therein. Facilitate high quality engaging sessions which develops the employability skills of prisoners. Alongside this, assist in coordinating the wider purposeful activity spaces across HMP Dovegate, ensuring the right prisoners are engaging in the right activities, at the right time as directed by their learning plan.Some of the other responsibilities of the Industrial Tutor are as follows:Assist in the daily operational delivery within the Industrial workshop, ensuring sessions run smoothly and are filled with appropriate prisoners. As a Tutor you will be delivering Vocational Qualifications alongside our current tutor team as we expand our offer.Prepare workshop sessions based on the construction industry using a variety of teaching and assessment methods to include high quality learning materials, equipment, and resources to maximise productive and effective learning opportunities

  • Drive a holistic purposeful activity strategy, maximising opportunities for prisoners to engage in work, education and training that will benefit their rehabilitation and the efficient running of the prison
  • Monitor prisoner attendance in activities and report concerns to the Industries PA Manager
  • Attend standardisation meetings as required to drive continuous improvement and enhance programme delivery

You will be an inspiring tutor with a background in education and will have had some experience of working within your specialist area. Good technical knowledge and skills are essential. Experience of working with learners from non-traditional backgrounds would also be beneficial. You will be gifted in delivering varied, high quality and imaginative sessions and have a record of good retention and success rates.What you will need to do the role

  • Occupational Experience in construction or painting and decorating or similar. Assessor qualifications are not essential.
  • Flexible approach to learning and using new skills, i.e., Delivering a range of different workshops
  • An understanding of prisoner work and activities
  • Strong communication skills
  • Good IT, literacy, and numeracy skills
  • Ability to develop, motivate and inspire learners throughout their programme of study
  • Collaborative team worker

Role Essentials

  • Planning agreed programmes of education activities to meet course aims and objectives, including syllabi and schemes of work, reviewing, and revising as continuous quality improvement.
  • Preparing individual lesson plans, planning learning activities, using high quality learning materials, equipment, and resources to maximise productive and effective learning opportunities for learners.
  • To administer all aspects of the accreditation process for learners enrolled on courses. This may be a training need which we will fully support with.
  • To ensure the delivery of a quality provision, embedding functional skills and fundamental British Values.
  • Maintaining accurate records, including learner attendance, records of work, progression route and levels of achievement.
  • Presenting reports for recruitment, retention and achievement and other performance reports as required.
  • Establishing and maintaining positive and professional relationships with learners, to create an appropriate environment for learning.
  • To cover lessons as required in the absence of colleagues to meet contractual requirements.
  • Carefully managing resources and the use of equipment, actively encouraging learners to value them.
  • Regularly evaluating own work and encouraging learners to evaluate constructively the programmes they attend, in order to contribute to the continuous development of the service.
  • To ensure certification for those learners participating in the course.
  • To provide learners with regular feedback and guidance to support their learning on a regular basis.
  • To actively promote all programme activities and ensure that current, accurate and appropriate promotional material is available to learners.
  • Working with education and training colleagues, including attending curriculum area meetings and staff meetings; working with colleagues in other departments to enhance programme delivery and to promote education and training.
  • Working in accordance with all statutory, Home Office, company, and department requirements. This will include reporting security and /or intelligence information immediately to the College Leaders and making referrals to the designated person/professional service providers.
  • Developing links with other disciplines within the programmes area at HMP Dovegate.
  • Maintaining links and information exchange with appropriate partnerships.
  • To share in the responsibility for ensuring good standards of learner behaviour and taking appropriate disciplinary action as required.
  • As required, to carry out rub down searching of prisoners to support the security aspects of the Tutor position.
  • To assist in other area(s) of the prison when instructed and directed by senior management.
  • Adhere to the sickness reporting guidelines set out at induction.
  • To undertake other duties as directed by senior management.

Qualifications:Desirable:

  • Level 3 Award in Education and Training (QCF)
  • Level 3 – subject specialism

Minimum:

  • GCSE C in Maths and English

Experience:

  • Occupational Experience in a field within the Construction sector.
  • Have proven experience of working in an environment that demands strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Have demonstrated flexibility and the ability to work to deadlines and under pressure.
  • Recent experience and appropriate knowledge.
  • Experience of a custodial environment would be an advantage
  • Experience of working with learners from non-traditional backgrounds

  • Have an understanding of the principles underpinning teaching adults, i.e., planning, delivery, assessment and evaluation of learning.

  • Have effective oral and written communication, numeracy, and interpersonal qualifications & skills to communicate effectively with staff and learners alike.
  • To develop and devise learning materials and approaches to the delivery of courses.
  • To keep up to date with national developments in curriculum.
  • To keep records as necessary to support the accreditation process.
  • To maintain professional relationships with colleagues from other areas
  • To deliver alternative subject(s) if the contract deems necessary.
