The role will support the CFO and Director Corporate Finance in ensuring the financial trajectory of the business is always clear and correctly linked to strategy and operational plans and will own the financial models that sit behind this.
The role holder will develop 5yr financial plans, establishing guidance/targets and core assumptions. Ensure all feeder plans/scenarios are aligned and have been considered in context of wider model. Provide analysis and insights as required.
This is an exciting role for anyone looking to gain an overview of the British Council’s financial strategy and build an understanding of the various business areas.Main Accountabilities:

  • Support the CFO/Director FP&A in the development/ongoing maintenance of a comprehensive 5yr financial model in conjunction with SBU, regions, functional leads and other key stakeholders across the business as applicable. This should incorporate but not be limited to:

o Projection of scenarios around our commercial businesses and the levels of investment required to deliver this.
o Scenario around levels of funding/activity in non-ODA and ODA
o Modelling of overheads to report functional profitability across the 3-5 year period
o Working with transformation and SBU leads incorporate efficiency profiles and the level of investment required to deliver
o Modelling of tax assumptions
o Generation of cash flow assumptions and forward-looking balance sheet metrics in line with accounting standards.

  • The model/plan should follow best practice both in terms of governance and construct. It should include reference to fully documented assumptions.
  • Support the Director FP&A in preparing clear and precise papers/presentations for the Board of Trustees and SLT on strategic planning and scenarios as applicable.
  • Support the Director FP&A in developing plans and providing analysis to secure ongoing access to ongoing funding from HMG both as part of the CSR work.
  • Provide analyses and insights to support commercial decision-making and so reference for example market, competitor, and customer information.
  • Work with external consultants/treasury and tax as necessary to develop assumptions/approach and modelling tools.

Qualifications
Minimum/essential

  • CCAB qualified accountant.
  • Proven senior professional experience in an equivalent position within a complex matrix organisation.

Knowledge and ExperienceMinimum/essential

  • Operating in international and multi-cultural organisations
  • Commercial finance experience gained in an organisation undergoing change and driving for growth
  • Financial modelling and analysis
  • Excellent excel skills
  • Ability to marshal resources in a global organisation to deliver project outcomes
  • Report writing and presentation skills.

Desirable

  • Shared Services Operations
  • Development and optimisation of SAP accounting and planning applications
  • What constitutes best practice in the upper quartile of finance functions
