Overview:The National Urban League is seeking a Senior Director, Technology & Telecommunications in the National Urban League Washington Bureau. Reporting to the Executive Director and Senior Vice President for Policy and Advocacy, the Senior Director, Technology & Telecommunications oversees the execution of the National Urban League’s policy engagement in the technology, telecommunications, and media industries. The successful candidate will have knowledge of trends and major developments in privacy, data protection, cybersecurity, and other issues that affect these industries. Working within the Washington Bureau, the Senior Director will be responsible for refining strategies to champion public policy initiatives at the Federal, State, and Local levels that promote economic and social justice in the technology, telecommunications, and media industries. Duties would include Managing the Urban League’s relationship with relevant Congressional, Administration, and Executive Agency leadership; Developing strategic campaigns to engage Silicon Valley; Advising Urban League affiliates on technology policy; and developing original analysis, which positions the Urban League as a thought leader on these issues.The Senior Director will work closely with members of the National Urban League Executive Staff in Urban League projects, programs, and initiatives, and will: Responsibilities:Essential Functions:
- Conduct relevant and targeted qualitative and quantitative analysis on topics important to the National Urban League’s mission, programs, advocacy, and constituents.
- Conduct relevant policy and content area specific, and legislative research, developing policy fact sheets, one-pagers, and offering support to Executive Staff at Urban League convenings.
- Monitor and analyze public policy issues while providing the Executive Staff with support in research and analysis on various topics, organizations, and key influencers related to the work of the National Urban League.
- Act as an ambassador for the National Urban League to elected officials, government agencies, as well as to civil society entities, public interest groups, and academic leaders engaged in policymaking on issues of importance to the National Urban League and its constituents.
- Engage in conversations about cutting-edge technology policy issues.
- Attend conferences/forums/briefings/coalition meetings as National Urban League representative.
- Assist in the preparation of Urban League advocacy, communication, and research materials: As required, serve as panelist, and thought leader on communications and technology issues.
- Advocate for policy solutions to pressing technology issues, including those affecting content moderation, data privacy and artificial intelligence.
- Provide front-line support on issues requiring engagement, solving problems, and escalating to internal colleagues as needed.
- Offer counsel and co-develop strategies for internal teams on stakeholder engagement, crisis management, solving problems across key public policy issues that impact the National Urban League’s communication and technology strategy.
- Keep staff abreast of trends in urban affairs, innovation, and reform.
Qualifications:Education:
- A juris doctorate, masters, or doctorate degree with a focus on technology and/or telecommunications law and public policy is preferred
Experience:
- Experience in Telcom Industry though law firm, governmental agency, or NGO p Leadership experience / 5+ years
- Ability to communicate orally and written in a clear, straightforward manner to all levels with influence and subject matter gravitas
- A leader capable of establishing and negotiating timelines to ensure timely delivery of high-quality work
- Flexible and adaptable to changing priorities:
- Strong critical thinking, questioning, and listening skills and excellent attention to detail. A communicator willing to be coached and to mentor a growing team.
Knowledge & Skills:
- A strong alignment with the needs of urban communities, alongside expertise in technology, telecommunications, and media issues.
- Excellent analytic, writing, and strategic planning skills, and a demonstrated ability to effectively manage multiple, often-conflicting deadlines and work demands.
- Creativity, flexibility, sound judgment, and ability to take initiative and work independently.
- Effective interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to interact professionally with diverse staff, clients, and consultants across varied geographies.
- A team player who can add value to the National Urban League team beyond his/her area of expertise.
- Inquisitive, self-starter, with ability to work independently and flexibly in a high- pressure environment.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate/ willingness to work with a team.
- Travel required 10%.
- This position is hybrid.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to fifteen pounds at times.
