Your Opportunity:Being the first and only Indigenous pediatric healthcare program in North America, the Awasisak Indigenous Health Program strives to meet our patients’ and families’ unique and complex needs. Hearing and responding to the voices of various Indigenous communities, the position of Indigenous Child and Family Engagement Coordinator (EC) was created. Acting as a “host” to the patients and families of the Awasisak Program, the EC fosters a culturally safe environment and ensures patients and families feel secure during their hospital stay/visit. Tailoring to different patients’ and families’ needs, the EC provides services and supports in a responsive and empathetic manner; the services and supports provided by the EC include but are not limited to resource-based intervention, patient advocacy, and facility introduction and navigation. Another critical responsibility of the EC is being the “bridge-builder” promoting respect and understanding between patient, family, and the care team. Providing consultation support and education/teaching opportunities, the EC also works with the care team to ensure they practice with a culturally safe approach and build and deepen the trust of the Awasisak Program and the Stollery Children’s Hospital. As the EC you will have the honor of connecting patients and families to traditional healing practices and work closely with the Indigenous Cultural Advisor. Lastly, the EC is responsible for establishing, maintaining, and building relationships with a diverse range of FNMI populations, communities, and organizations. We believe, with your support and expertise, we can better the well-being of our Indigenous patients and families, together.Description:Basic assessment and Resource-Based Interventions. Roles and Responsibilities. Provision of hospitality, problem-solving, advocacy, and spiritual and cultural care to Indigenous children and their families in various life situations and crisis circumstances at the Stollery. Act as a “bridge builder” on the multidisciplinary team helping to promote respect and understanding between Indigenous child and their family and staff of the hospital or community. Provide leadership in activities and ceremonies that help Alberta Health Service staff and physicians embrace Indigenous peoples and their cultures, providing healing through honouring Traditional Indigenous ways in Western Scientific health care. Share with other Stollery programs and services ways to work with Indigenous peoples in respectful and caring ways. Fulfill administrative duties respectful of sacred boundaries and confidentiality

Required Qualifications:As a bona fide occupational requirement, and under Section 11 of the Alberta Human Rights Act, only Indigenous applicants will be considered. *Please identify in your application* A minimum of 3-5 years of progressive experience working in a health-related field requires problem-solving and working with Indigenous children and families. Broad knowledge of Indigenous history and cultures within Alberta. High degree of cultural competence as it relates to working with Indigenous people.
Additional Required Qualifications:Knowledge and respect for the diversity of Indigenous populations and communities. Ability to work independently and as part of a healthcare team. Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with others. Demonstrates good written skills and use of relevant computer software. Both networking and relationship-building experience will also be a priority within this role.
Preferred Qualifications:The ability to speak an Indigenous language is an asset.
