If you are comfortable juggling multiple priorities at the same time, committed to leading your team to consistently perform to a high standard, and thrive in a collaborative work environment, then this opportunity to join the Alberta Parks team is for you!The Area Manager manages a multi-site, multi-disciplinary team of professional, technical, and administrative staff within the Alberta Parks Athabasca – Cold Lake Management Area which consists of numerous provincial parks and provincial recreation areas. The incumbent will be responsible for integration of program functions to ensure maximum operational efficiency is achieved and maintained.Responsibilities include overseeing the management and delivery of Alberta Parks programs which include but are not limited to:

  • Municipal Services and Maintenance: site servicing, janitorial, grounds maintenance, waste management, potable water provision, wastewater treatment
  • Visitor Services: Visitor Centre operations, check-in and reservation services, retail, visitor information
  • Visitor Engagement: Interpretation and Education services
  • Recreation and Resource Management (Park Rangers): compliance, monitoring, visitor management, emergency management

Program delivery must focus on being park visitor centric and client focused. Emphasis on visitor safety, facilitating high quality visitor experiences, adherence to policy and legislative requirements, and managing partnerships for the purpose of supplementing core resources and program enhancement is critical.In addition to managing operational budgets, human resources, contracts, administrative functions, and operational planning, the Area Manager plays a key role in coordinating and liaising with divisional and departmental contacts as well as municipal, First Nations and non-government organizations (NGO) stakeholders on a variety of operational matters.Through the work as a member of the Alberta Parks team, the incumbent will make a meaningful contribution to Albertans’ quality of life and ensure that parks remain healthy as well as accessible for future generations.Click to view job description.APS CompetenciesCompetencies are behaviors that are essential to reach our goals in serving Albertans. It is in this environment that you will effectively identify creative and sustainable solutions.QualificationsRequired Qualifications:University degree in business administration, park or recreation facility administration or management, natural resource management, natural sciences, or a related field supplemented by a minimum of 4 years of directly related experience with progressively increasing level of responsibility.Additional Requirements:

  • Class 5 Driver’s License or equivalent
  • Successful candidate will require a Criminal Record Check prior to employment

Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education

Preferred experience includes:

  • Ability to lead diverse technical and professional staff
  • Contract and partnership management (preferably in a public sector or large corporate setting) experience
  • Budget management and financial administration experience
  • Ability to synthesize information or data to provide briefings and make recommendations to executive leadership level
  • Build effective relationships with colleagues at various levels across the organization
