The Construction Monitoring Program (CMP) carries out cleanups and interim remedial works at historic LLRW sites in Port Hope and across Canada, and constructs, operates, and performs environmental monitoring of waste storage facilities until a long-term solution is available.The CMP Field Technician position reports to the Manager of radiation Protection in Port Hope, Ontario. The primary accountability of the CMP Field Technician is to support the Project Coordinator in the delivery of the Construction Monitoring Program.The CMP Field Technician position will support technical activities (in the field and the office) of the Construction Monitoring Program team working at sites across Canada under the guidance of the Project Coordinator and Manager of Radiation Protection. The working environment will include those potentially impacted by historic low-level radioactive waste and associated contaminants of potential concern.What will you be doing!Monitor construction sites throughout Ward 1 of the municipality of Port Hope to identify the presence of LLRW

• Collecting field measurements using a variety of instrumentation, collecting samples and maintaining accurate/complete records in accordance with prescribed processes and plans; collection, tracking, preparation and analysis of samples for radiological and non-radiological parameters.
• Performing site maintenance activities and provision of oversight to site maintenance contractors.
• Perform characterization activities for sites within the scope of the Construction Monitoring Program, including verification following the completion of remediation work.
• Working with field and laboratory instruments and applying known or developing new techniques.
• Production and maintenance of detailed records related to measurements and analytical results for field and laboratory work.
• Maintaining inventory of equipment and consumables.
• Assist in the calibration and maintenance of radiation survey meters and field equipment.
• Provide input to planning and controlling expenditures associated with the Construction Monitoring Program’s projects and programs.

Facilitate removal and in some cases verify remediation of LLRW in accordance with Property owners/Contractors’ project scope of work

• Perform CNL-led remediation verification activities for sites within the scope of the Construction Monitoring program, in conjunction with CNL’s Third Party Remediation Verification Contractor.
• Maintaining daily logs of contractor activities for work done on behalf of CNL.
• Assist with the safe excavation and TDG Class 7 Shipment of LLRW, excavated from residential and commercial sites around Port Hope.
• Documentation of field and laboratory procedures as they are developed and applied.
• Radiological analyses of environmental samples for alpha, beta and gamma radiation.
• Preparation and shipment of samples for analysis by other CNL Branches and off-site laboratories.
• Managing sample inventories and waste materials.

Perform environmental monitoring duties in accordance with established procedures to maintain compliance with 182 License requirements.

• Performing environmental and compliance monitoring at CNL-operated sites, including the Port Hope Environmental Laboratory.
• Performing laboratory work with minimal supervision.
• Working as part of a team to solve complex environmental challenges.
• Managing data, creating and updating spreadsheets, and preparing figures and presentations.
• Administrative, Laboratory, and Outdoor field work, with moderate to high physical effort at times.
• Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for :Education

• A diploma in Environmental Technology or Post-Secondary Degree in the related sciences or its equivalent in experience, additional education and/or recognized training.
• A valid Ontario class “G” (or equivalent) driver’s license.

Experience1-3 years’ experience in environmental field work and sample collection techniques, including air, groundwater, surface water, sediment and soil. Other work experiences should include installation, calibration, and maintenance of sampling equipment. Prior experience within the construction industry would be an asset.Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Ability to perform environmental sampling techniques across a wide range of media.
• Understanding of basic construction principles and practices.
• The ability to work effectively, and maintain good working relationships with other team members.
• A ‘working safe’ approach to the job, with good judgment and a questioning attitude.
• Other outdoor skills and experiences such as operation of GPS systems and knowledge of maps, operation of other equipment, such as hand held tools. Effective communication to engage homeowners, stakeholders, and contractors.
• Working ability with Microsoft Office software, especially Word and Excel

Job/Industry Specific Knowledge:

• Knowledgeable in; construction practices, environmental sampling, radiation protection, characterization, remediation
• Ability to obtain G2 RP qualification within 12 months.
