Salary: Full time starting salary is normally in the range £45,585 to £54,395 with potential progression once in post to £61,198Role SummaryWe are seeking to welcome a new colleague to strengthen and continue to grow our research and education in space engineering. This is a hugely exciting time to be joining our community of aerospace engineers. These roles are a strategic investment to grow our research-intensive educational programmes in Aerospace Engineering, in particular our successful BEng/MEng Aerospace Engineering programmes, and our new MSc in Space Engineering. The space sector is in a period of transformative growth and change. This role will be a key part of developing our space activities in line with our university’s core mission of world class research and outstanding global education that establishes us as one of the world’s top 50 universities within the next decade. Potential areas of space engineering research and educational focus include, but are not limited to:

  • Astrodynamics and flight mechanics,
  • Space systems engineering, including model-based approaches,
  • Spacecraft energy, power and propulsion,
  • Spacecraft structural and thermal engineering.

The successful candidate be expected to initiate and conduct national and internationally significant research and engage with the development of delivery of education programmes that develop diverse and highly skilled future talent for the aerospace sector.Main DutiesUse a variety of methods to educate and mentor individuals and groups of undergraduates, postgraduates, or CPD students, including programme design, teaching, assessment, supervision and personal tutoring.Delivering a nationally and internationally significant research programme, including securing financial support from diverse sources (research councils, industry), planning and leading the research activities and staff, publishing and presenting results in journals and at international conferences and pursuing any impact and commercialisation opportunities from research.Proactively contributing to school administration activities that support research and education, and to do this in a manner than promotes and inclusive culture and environment and supports colleagues and university life more widely.Person Specification

  • A PhD, or equivalent industrial engineering research experience, in a relevant discipline of Engineering or Physical Science.
  • Evidence of the knowledge and experience required to identify, plan and deliver internationally significant space engineering research programmes.
  • Evidence of the ability and drive to inspire the next generation of aerospace engineers through developing and delivering world-class education programmes.
  • Highly effective written and verbal communications skills, sufficient to undertake research, teaching and administration duties in English.
  • Demonstrate outstanding interpersonal skills and commitment to professional activities such as mentoring qualities and promotion of equality, diversity and inclusivity in the engineering profession.
  • Commitment to Continuing Professional Development through plans and activities that would lead to achievements such as (but not limited to) professional registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng) or Chartered Scientist (CSci), membership of a professional engineering institution (such as RAeS) or appropriate categories of HEA Fellowship.
