The University is at a key stage in its institutional transformation, with the implementation of its Academic and Strategic Plan and guiding principles—driving positive impact, decolonization, indigenization, and equity, environmental sustainability, emerging as a vibrant hub, student-centered approaches, innovation in learning, teaching, and research, and financial stewardship.Project Details:The Research Assistant Visual Analytics and Project Support will undertake visualization research in urban design and planning, engaging with spatial visual analytics applying GIS science and 3D procedural modeling. The RA will apply diverse visual analytics and computational tools, including exploring AI applications in the context of Visual Analytics projects. Relevant projects include iCity2.0 and its sub-project Northcrest and Building a Data Fluent Canadian Cultural Sector. iCity2.0 is an urban data science and design research hub co-located at OCAD University and the University of Toronto. They will provide research coordination support across all Visual Analytics Lab projects, which includes project documentation, maintaining Zotero libraries, coordinating Esri map sets, organizing meetings, encouraging dialogues between project researchers, providing minutes and records of decisions and coordinating activities They will help to plan publications and conference presentations. They will be a member of the larger iCity2.0 team co-located at OCAD U and University of Toronto.Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with Dr Sara Diamond, the iCity research team, Northcrest research team and others to design and conduct research in the areas of (i) complete communities, (ii) spatial visual analytic tools, (iii) data analytics, (iv) cultural analytics.
  • Develop means to catalogue and correlate research across urban and cultural analytics.
  • Coordinate and minute Visual Analytics research efforts.
  • Develop, maintain, and share Zotero libraries.
  • Support the development of presentation and publication materials. Present results at academic conferences and industry meetings, prepare and publish peer-reviewed articles.
  • Identify and apply appropriate AI tools to support thematic analysis and imaging.
  • Apply user-centric design in the development of visual analytics frameworks.
  • Apply Esri’s ArcGIS and CityEngine and use district data and GIS 3D visualization in the context of complete communities and cultural analytics.
  • Participate in VAL planning and iCity meetings.
  • Publish research results in key academic journals and conference proceedings.
  • Participating in the provision of safe and secure environment for all members of the University community and its facilities

Qualifications:

  • Must be enrolled in OCAD University at either the undergraduate or graduate levels.
  • Excellent project management skills and ability to use project management tools.
  • Excellent project documentation skills.
  • Ability to undertake a literature review.
  • Knowledge, interest and demonstrated ability in 2D and 3D data visualization application development.
  • Programming languages: map-based visualization, preferably Esri ArcGIS, CityEngine. Python if possible; tools such as D3; Tableau Public; Chartjs; PowerBI; Canva. •
  • Ability to participate in academic publication.
  • Interested in working with industrial research partners.
  • Strong team collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and engage in a program of research
  • Demonstrated commitment to the principles of equity and diversity and experience promoting a respectful work and learning environment for students, staff and faculty

Hours of Work: 15 hours per weekWork Environment: The incumbent in this role will be expected to report to work on campus.Compensation: $21.32 (Undergraduate Rate) /$33.78 (Graduate Rate) per hour, subject to qualifications, plus 6% in lieu of benefits plus vacation pay, as applicable, per the provisions of the Employment Standards ActPlease note the following:
