As part of the Isotopes, Radiobiology & Environment Directorate (IRED), the Biology R&D Facility Branch at CNL is seeking a highly skilled senior veterinary technologist to provide technical support to the Biological Research Facility (BRF) projects for the Federal Nuclear Science and Technology (FNST) program, commercial customers. The position reports to the animal care team section head for day-to-day duties and responsibilities surrounding rodent care and husbandry, working as a member of a team, and must be sensitive to the demanding regulatory compliance requirements.What will you be doing!
The incumbents’ overall responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Act as a subject matter expert in the field of veterinary technology providing guidance to members of the animal care team.
  • Assist in the teaching and mentorship of junior animal care team staff.
  • As a member of a team the incumbent performs in-vivo studies ensuring the ethical care and husbandry of laboratory rodents in support of the delivery of project commitments.
  • Provides input/suggestions to Veterinarians for operational improvements.
  • Provide guidance, input, and suggestion to management regarding new techniques, skills, needed equipment for the vivarium.
  • Identify and troubleshoot undesirable conditions related to equipment, processes, and animal care. Report findings and recommendations to the animal care team supervisor.
  • Understand and work under sterile conditions to maintain BRF Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) status.
  • Understand and closely follow relevant company policies, CCAC Guidelines, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Quality and Safety programs, and Animal Use Protocol requirements. Create new SOPS and provide input/recommendations to Quality and safety program as they relate to animal techniques, care, and husbandry.
  • Possess the necessary skills to communicate and coordinate with Management, study team, procurement, external customers, vendors, etc.
  • Provide input/recommendations to procedures. e.g., Facility-Specific SOPs, Radiological Protection Training, GLP Training.
  • Performs regular weekend work (usually 1 weekend every 6-8 weekends for 4 hours per weekend day), long weekend work (usually 1-2, 3-day weekends per year for 4 hours each day) and work during statutory and company holidays during the Christmas shut-down.
  • Log and maintain equipment records as per established requirements and reporting and filing of equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for:

  • Graduation from a recognized institute of advanced technology in a field relevant to the position, such as a Veterinary Technologist diploma or equivalent formal education and normally has more than (12) years of pertinent technological experience OR Secondary School Honour Graduation and normally has more than fifteen (15) years of pertinent and progressive experience, or the equivalent in experience, additional education and/or training.
  • Minimum of 12 years of relevant experience in a laboratory animal setting is preferred
  • Registered Laboratory Animal Technician (RLAT) or Registered Master Laboratory Animal technician (RMLAT) are considered strong assets.
  • Demonstrated superior understanding of the principles and applications of Veterinary husbandry is essential.
  • Ability to collect and review data and interpret results for adverse/unexpected trends.
  • Willingness to adhere to challenging schedule demands, overtime, or flexible work hours, including occasional weekend work, is required.
  • Must have demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills and have effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as an effective team member. Experience with leadership/supervisor experience being considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated experience working in an aseptic or pathogen-free environment would be considered an asset.
  • Work history with laboratory equipment calibration, validation, verification, and performing troubleshooting, repairs, and optimization, is considered an asset.
  • Strong connection/visibility to the laboratory research community would be considered an asset.

Security clearance eligibility required: Reliability Status which has a minimum requirement of 3 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. . CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat’s “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”Working Conditions:
Physical and Sensory Demands:

  • This position requires close contact with animals and potential allergens.
  • This position provides lots of challenges and interesting task changes as new research projects begin but also consists of repetitive tasks.
  • Overtime and flexible work schedules may be required. Occasional weekend work (rotation) will also be needed.

Working Environment:

  • Opportunities for continuing education may be provided.
  • This job requires special entry and exit procedures into and out of the building where the employee will be based and will perform work. Employees are required to wear PPE&C frequently (e.g., wear scrubs, lab coats, gloves, hair nets and surgical masks for a large portion of each day). The work environment is for the most part, devoid of windows and thus lacks natural sunlight. The office area is an open area with several people working in the same room however much of the working day may be spent working alone.
