OGA’s major activities include:
- Initiating and supporting scholarly research on global issues across campus units and departments, disseminating information about relevant faculty expertise, funding opportunities, and institutional ties abroad.
- Providing a portal through which external stakeholders – including business leaders, representatives of local, regional, and national government, NGO activists, international alumni, and ethnic and cultural affinity communities – can learn about and participate in campus activities and resources.
- Serving as a central guide and resource for developing and successfully implementing study abroad programs, collaboration with international scholars, the conduct of global research, and the design and nurturing of foreign institutional partnerships.
- Supporting UW community members in planning and carrying out UW’s international scholarship and business in a safe, productive manner.
To facilitate these functions, OGA has five main areas of responsibility: administration of study abroad and exchanges; support for international research; oversight of UW’s centers and offices abroad; management of UW international relations and protocols; and coordination of strategic initiatives in the key areas of global health, global environment, global technology, global development challenges, and global cultural change.The Office of Global Affairs and UW Study Abroad has an outstanding opportunity for a Counseling Services Coordinator.The goal of the position is to increase awareness about study abroad and to recruit students to participate in study abroad at the University of Washington in line with the strategic priorities of UW Study Abroad.This new position will play a strategic role in formulating and focusing effective resources and initiatives aimed at increasing student awareness of study abroad opportunities at the University of Washington, and recruiting students to participate in study abroad programs and events.Key responsibilities include the creation and dissemination of promotional materials about study abroad using a variety of channels including email, website, social media, and in-person events.A portion of this position is dedicated to in-person or virtual advising meetings with students interested in study abroad, to increase awareness of student experiences and to better understand the barriers students may face in participating in study abroad programs.The University of Washington views international education, cultural diversity, and the development of globally- competent students as central to its educational mission. This position plays an essential role in this mission by formulating and focusing effective resources and initiatives aimed at increasing student awareness of study abroad opportunities at the University of Washington, and recruiting students to participate in study abroad programs and events.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES80% Study Abroad Outreach and Recruitment
- Creating UW Study Abroad’s annual strategic marketing and communications plan for student-facing communications and outreach activities.
- Coordinating study abroad outreach events and activities across the academic year.
- Planning and executing student-facing in-person and virtual events and engagements to increase awareness of study abroad opportunities.
- Leading content creation for UW Study Abroad’s social media channels, including short-form videos and takeovers to promote peer-to-peer storytelling.
- Drafting and sending out email newsletters to students about study abroad, including text writing, image formatting, and adherence to accessibility guidelines.
- Planning and executing targeted and effective communication and outreach campaigns aimed at students at key points in the study abroad application process or around application deadlines.
- Planning and creating visually-appealing and brand compliant promotional materials for study abroad programs (e.g. flyers, stickers, brochures, social media)
- Building effective partnerships for study abroad outreach & recruitment across the UW’s three campuses.
- Building and maintaining relationships with study abroad offices at other Big 10 institutions to better understand evolving best practices in study abroad outreach and recruitment.
- Creating resources to support faculty-led program directors with targeted outreach and recruitment for their study abroad programs, as needed.
- Providing content for the UW Study Abroad website, including storytelling and profiling student experiences studying abroad.
- Leading and coordinating the organization of the annual UW Study Abroad Fair.
20% Study Abroad Advising
- Advising students on a wide range of study abroad programs and opportunities.
- Translating this advising experience into improvements in outreach.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum education: This position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in communications, marketing, public relations or related field.
- Minimum two to three years of related work experience.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Experience creating content and monitoring and responding to user engagement for social media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube.
- Experience with writing communications and conducting outreach/recruitment to student audiences.
- Proficiency in WordPress.
- Strong interpersonal and written and oral communication skills, including public speaking and presentations.
- Demonstrated creativity, organizational ability, and attention to detail.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience with institutional student databases.
- Experience using Terra Dotta or other CRM systems.
- Experience using Marketo.
- Experience with MS Office tools and Google Suite.
- Experience in study abroad, international education, advising, experiential learning, or a related field.
- Program or project management in an education or higher education setting.
CONDITITONS OF EMPLOYMENTThis position is located within the Office of Global Affairs (OGA), a small team of 20 staff that serve as the key point of contact for all international education initiatives at the UW. UW Study Abroad serves around 3000 students annually, creating a fast-paced and high-volume work environment. This volume requires that we think and plan at scale. The position also needs to serve as a bridge across multiple teams, setting an outreach and recruitment strategy in collaboration between OGA Marketing & Communications and the UW Study Abroad team.
