Please direct any accommodation requests to our recruitment team.Primary functionThe CRO provides high-quality legal and other support services to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of legal action on behalf of clients of LAO-funded community legal clinics and Student Legal Services Organizations [SLSOs]. Our services include: individual file assistance; publications in key areas of clinic law and practice; training for clinic and SLSO caseworkers; court litigation support; facilitating communication/knowledge sharing among clinic practitioners; and, supporting inter-clinic Working Groups and clinics generally with the identification of systemic issues, research, law reform, and litigation strategies.Work on important and interesting poverty law and equality issues with a team committed to high quality legal services and access to justice for low-income Ontarians. Use your clinic law expertise and excellent analytical and writing skills to provide legal advice and opinions, and a range of legal supports, to advocates in community legal clinics and student legal services organizations (SLSOs) across Ontario. Write case-specific research memoranda, support litigation at all levels of tribunals and courts in clinic law areas, and contribute to a variety of clinic system and SLSO activities.Home Location: Toronto Provincial Office

  • Providing legal, strategic and practice advice to clinic and SLSO lawyers and community legal workers in clinic areas of law (social assistance, housing, EI, CPP/OAS, human rights & Charter)
  • Participation in regional and provincial clinic CPD/training events, as appropriate
  • Other project work in accordance with interests and skills

Required skills & experience

  • Lawyer (L1) member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario
  • Excellent legal writing and analytical skills
  • Significant recent experience practicing, and demonstrated expertise in, one or more major areas of clinic law in Ontario (e.g. social assistance, housing, CPP, EI)
  • Experience appearing before one or more clinic law tribunals
  • Demonstrated strong interest in clinic law issues
  • Demonstrated superior legal research skills with traditional and electronic research sources
  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong computer skills, including demonstrated advanced ability with Microsoft Word and Outlook, and experience with other Microsoft Office applications
  • Familiarity with Zoom and Teams
  • Adept at working both independently and as part of a team
  • Able to work with shifting priorities in a fast-paced work environment

Assets

  • Experience using the CRO website and practice resources
  • Experience practicing in a variety of clinic law areas (e.g. housing, social assistance, CPP, EI, human rights & the Charter)
  • Advanced knowledge of administrative law and procedure
  • Publication experience
  • Court litigation experience
  • Experience delivering legal training presentations
  • Ability to speak, read and write French
