The Research Coordinator is responsible for supporting research initiatives for the Cooper Lab at the BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute. Responsibilities will include research project administration, grant administration and facilitation, supporting research operations, coordinating knowledge translation and outreach activities, research ethics and regulatory administration, and finance administration.Organizational StatusThe UBC Department of Orthopaedics has an international reputation for excellence in teaching, research and patient care. Our mission is to create knowledge, advance learning, and improve musculoskeletal health for the community at the provincial, national, and international levels. The Department consists of seven clinical divisions and a division of orthopaedic research, and is comprised of 200+ academic and clinical faculty who choose to contribute large blocks of their time to advance knowledge in the areas of clinical orthopaedics, musculoskeletal science as well as applied biomedical engineering and related basic science areas. This focus allows the Department to be at the forefront of exciting new developments in the areas of minimally invasive joint replacement, improved bone healing, advanced techniques in spinal surgery, innovative arthroscopic techniques, and improved biomaterials and implants.Cooper Lab multidisciplinary clinical research program which works to create and catalyze efforts to improve the quality of life of children with limb differences. Pediatric limb differences represent a wide spectrum of devastating conditions affecting children. Cooper lab strives to provide these children with the best possible treatment and care based on the up-to-date research in this field, promote pediatric orthopedic health both in-province, and in a global-health context. Work centers around prospective, longitudinal registries focusing on pediatric limb differences, measurement of quality of life, the development and implementation of patient reported outcome measures in clinical practice, quality improvement projects to improve the quality and safety of healthcare delivery and innovative methods in pediatric surgery to eliminate intra-operative uncertainty. A primary area of focus is to continue expanding the program to provide opportunities for equal access to care for patients with limb differences and equal access to research and education for health care professionals around the world. This team is supported by the UBC Department of Orthopedics, which has an international reputation for excellence in teaching, research and patient care.The incumbent reports to the Principal Investigator and the senior research staff and has working relationship with other clinicians, faculty, staff and students within the lab and department.Work Performed

  • Prepares and assists with the writing of research funding proposals, grant applications, and reports for Government, Non-profit, and Canadian and International sponsors.
  • Coordinates the preparation and submission of research related regulatory documents (ethics, permits, etc.).
  • Coordinates and facilitates patient recruitment, as well as data collection, management, and reporting.
  • Supports systems administration (including registry user access) and basic systems development and sustainment (including survey requirements, development, and testing).
  • Supports research project administration by assisting with recruitment, facilitating onboarding, and supporting collaborating sites.
  • Maintains research agreements and key relationship information, as well as coordinating project updates to various participants and stakeholders.
  • Facilitates and supports recruitment, training, and supervision of student and other team members.
  • Researches and determines the applicability of new technology and systems related to research being done.
  • Facilitates project communication, tracking and updates among lab and project teams. Actively supports social media initiatives of the Lab and related programs.
  • Manages shared team resources such as team calendars, activity trackers, file repositories, etc.
  • Assists with preparing and submitting manuscripts for publication.
  • Troubleshoots and assesses the maintenance and usage of research infrastructure, as well as coordinates purchasing of shared research infrastructure.
  • Assists with lab and program communications, including presentations, newsletters, webpages, and preparing information on research programs for media, fundraising organizations, and potential donors.
  • Processes finance paperwork for accounts within UBC and PHSA (JVs, Qreqs, outside invoices) and tracks research account spending.
  • Participates in special meetings and events that can occasionally diverge from normal work hours.
  • Coordinates research seminars, outreach events, and other research and academic events, as needed.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Consequence of Error/JudgementFailure to plan or follow up on initiatives and poor judgment or errors dealing with such matters would have an adverse effect on the Cooper Lab research productivity, reputation, and operational management of the Lab. Ability to work collaboratively and exercise sound judgment in dealing with administrative matters where there may be no established policies, procedures or guidelines is essential. Failure to act in a professional, tactful manner would have an adverse effect on campus and community relations.Errors in the management of research agreements and practices could result in unusable data and damage to reputation and relationships with collaborators and contributors. Errors in the management of accounts, as well as errors in reporting procedures, could result in a waste of financial resources, non-renewal of research funding, or loss of currently held funding. Inadequate documentation, organization, communication, and planning may adversely affect the image and reputation of the Lab and its parent organizations (BCCHRI, UBC, PHSA).Supervision Received
This position works independently under the direction of the Principal Investigator and Senior Research Staff, and works closely with all members of the team, as well as collaborating teams.Supervision Given
The Research Coordinator may provide direction to volunteers, students, and new staff regarding orientation, ongoing safety requirements, and research and operational procedures. The incumbent may delegate work as necessary to ensure that the goals of various projects are met in a timely and efficient manner.Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.– Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own– Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusionPreferred QualificationsEducation: An undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline or Graduation from a technical college or institute.Experience: Experience working with research and researchers within an academic community is strongly preferred, including familiarity with CIHR grants processes and research ethics (RISe). Experience with project management, communications, and processing and interpreting financial statements are preferred. Appropriate knowledge of UBC and PHSA admin procedures preferred. Experience with clinical research procedures strongly preferredKnowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, basic graphic design, and webpage maintenance.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
