Please apply as soon as possible if interested.About the roleWe are looking for an Ethical, Packaging & Waste Manager to ensure that our Supply Chain, suppliers and factories are consistently meeting Matalan’s ethical policies and standards and manage the development and procurement of product packaging across the business.Ethical & Packaging

  • Accountable for overseeing and ensuring uniformity in packaging across the business, covering design, functionality, sourcing, production, delivery and in-store display.
  • Ensure all packaging is fit for purpose, using the most cost effective methods to satisfy waste reduction targets.
  • Provide guidance and education on packing issues and compliance requirements.
  • Review and maintain the Matalan suppliers policies and code of conduct to ensure that Matalan complies with the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and relevant legislation.
  • Work proactively to examine any potential risk to Human Rights in the supply chain, establishing a sustained culture to mitigate any identified risks to Human Rights.
  • Establish accurate and timely data, reports and KPI’s to the Matalan business that will measure compliance performance, assist supplier and factory selection to the sourcing and product teams.
  • Review and where necessary amend the current factory auditing process, to ensure through due diligence, that the tiers within the factory supply base are consistently meeting the Matalan Ethical Standards
  • Develop and uphold a process for addressing non-compliance with Matalan’s Ethical standards, which ensures suppliers understand consequences and implications if not adhered too.
  • Develop a robust relationship and act as key point of contact to external stakeholders, ethical organisations (e.g., ETI, International Accord etc.) NGO’s, Campaigners and Trade Unions
  • Ensure a robust co-ordinated and immediate response on behalf of Matalan when complaints and incidents occur.
  • Contribute to the annual CR/ESG Matalan reports.

Sourcing & Supply Management

  • Building and managing relationships with global packaging suppliers.
  • Identify and evaluate packaging supplier capabilities, considering factors such as quality, pricing, reliability and delivery terms.
  • Negotiation supplier contractual agreements and pricing.
  • Oversee new development, pricing and quality with nominated print partners and hanger suppliers.
  • Monitor rebate values from nominated printers, analysing potential growth and/or shortfall.
  • Assist QC Hubs with quality issues relating to packaging, investigating for counterfeit or non compliant packaging.

Sustainability & ESG

  • Regularly complete store and competitor visits to identify opportunities for new innovation in packaging.
  • Lead and create the sustainability strategy for Plastic reduction.

Packaging Waste & Legislation

  • Lead the collection and submission of Packaging waste, Plastic Tax and EPR data requirements.
  • Actively engage with external partners to keep up to date with legislative requirements or changes.

People Leadership

  • Lead, engage and retain colleagues to create a high performing team performance culture
  • Act as a role model for personal growth whilst supporting and encouraging career development and progression

About You

  • Previous experience as a Senior Leader in the Ethical and/or Packaging field
  • Exceptional negotiation and communications skills
  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships both internally and externally with a focus on collaborating, tackling issues and managing risk
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, stakeholders and deadlines in a time pressured environment whilst maintaining accuracy and attention to detail
  • Strategic and analytical thinking with the ability to provide information and analysis in a clear, concise and impactful way
  • Experience in & understanding of Legislation relating to Packaging waste
