We are looking for an Indigenous Engagement Officer to work closely and collaboratively with Indigenous Relations managers, advisors and officers, as well as with other CNL departments, to support the delivery of the corporate-wide Indigenous Relations program. Do you have experience scheduling, creating communications content for, actively participating in, and recording the outcomes of engagement activities with Indigenous Nations, communities and organizations? In this role, you will be tracking the progress of CNL’s commitments made to Indigenous Nations, communities and organizations, activities related to memoranda of understanding and relationship agreements, and coordinating the development of the Indigenous engagement sections of regulatory and other reports and engagement plans. • Communicating with Indigenous Nations, communities and organizations to share relevant project information, updates and disclosures through email, phone, in-person meetings, and at events; respond to enquiries or escalate to Communications & Engagement manager.
• Scheduling and arranging engagement activities, facilitating logistics and creating agendas.
• Creating communications content as required and coordinating consolidating content required from other CNL departments.
• Recording meeting notes and actions in Indigenous meetings; tracking actions follow-up on progress with those assigned to complete the actions.
• Coordinating tracking, disposition and fulfillment of CNL commitments to Indigenous Nations, communities and organizations generated through engagement interactions, document review and formal interventions.
• Tracking activities related to memoranda of understanding, relationship agreements and other agreements as well as community-specific engagement and communications strategies.
• Ensuring all interactions with representatives of Indigenous Nations, communities and organizations and related pertinent information are documented and filed per CNL corporate record requirements and as required by regulatory licencing.
• Leading and/or contributing to the development of Indigenous engagement sections of regulatory and/or other project reports and plans.
• Coordinating the verification by Indigenous Nations, communities, and CNL organizations reporting on Indigenous engagement activities.
• Advising CNL colleagues on the importance of incorporating sufficient time for progress on Indigenous related commitments and related considerations into broader planning, scope and schedule for project activities.
• Working closely and collaboratively with other CNL personnel involved in Indigenous and public engagement to promote alignment of strategies and approaches across CNL and advance corporate efforts towards reconciliation.
• Providing AECL with timely notice of planned Indigenous engagements and updates on outcomes of engagement activities; escalate potential or realized issues or concerns to Communications & Engagement manager.
• Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for:

• Education

• Post-secondary degree in a relevant area of study (e.g. Indigenous studies and/or communications and/or environmental sciences or related field)
• Experience

• Three to five years’ experience working in Indigenous relations and/ or communications or engagement.
• Experience working in Indigenous communities is an asset.
• Experience communicating in group forums with Indigenous Nations and organizations at the member/citizen and staff level is an asset.
• Experience working on a multidisciplinary team is an asset.
• Preference may be given to applicants who self-identify as having Indigenous heritage (First Nations, Métis or Inuit).
• Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Highly organized with the ability to work under and meet tight deadlines.
• Ability to connect and promote collaborative engagement with Indigenous Nations, communities, and organization representatives in a culturally appropriate way.
• Understanding of traditional use studies and their meaningful consideration and integration in projects and operations.
• Superior written and oral skills, including composition, grammar, terminology, writing style and approach in preparing effective, well-written, high-quality informative content and reports for a variety of technical and public audiences.
• Strong interpersonal and oral and written communication and presentation skills, including the ability to demonstrate tact and diplomacy when dealing with issues, conflicts or negotiations.
• Ability to communicate complex technical/scientific/environmental information to public audiences in clear, understandable language.
• Strong priority management and project management skills, with superior ability to work with cross-functional teams and manage multiple projects with diverse requirements and deadlines.
• Strong knowledge of MS Office Suite.
• Valid driver’s license is required.
• Knowledge of issues affecting Indigenous communities, Indigenous engagement best practices, and Canada’s history with Indigenous peoples.
• Security Clearance Eligibility Required

• Level 2 Secret requires a minimum of 7 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat’s “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”
