Supplemental InformationThe Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is responsible for managing and protecting the state’s renewable natural resources, including all wildlife and aquatic life. LDWF supports a strong work ethic in its employees and incorporates the use of good science, accurate information and technology. The Office of Wildlife exists to provide wise stewardship of Louisiana’s wildlife and associated habitats and increase wildlife conservation awareness.This is a highly complex unclassified Veterinarian managerial position involving responsibility for management of the statewide disease program with broad supervision from the Biologist Director and Administrator of Wildlife Division. This position shall be occupied by a Louisiana-licensed and Level-2 federally accredited veterinarian. This position serves as a high-level advisor for the state and administrative staff in areas of wildlife diseases in conjunction with other state, federal and local governments and non-governmental organizations (NGO’s).This position represents the Department on the SEAFWA Wildlife Health Technical Committee and the SEAFWA Wild Hog Working Group as part of the SEAFWA Wildlife Resource Committee. Also represents the Department on the AFWA Feral Swine Working Group, the AFWA Wildlife Health Committee, the AFWA Lead working Group and on the Louisiana Feral Hog Management Advisory Task Force. Develops, coordinates and directs statewide disease surveillance and research, wildlife disease outbreak response and management, chemical immobilization policy and implementation, and assisting other species management and Department programs. Additionally, the position provides continuing education in wildlife disease issues and significance for LDWF staff, guest lectures at universities, presents at public meetings, serves as the state wildlife disease expert, and coordinates with other federal and state wildlife disease agencies. Reviews current scientific literature and disseminates relevant information to department staff. Evaluates/edits research projects and makes recommendations concerning results and funding opportunities. Administers the Wildlife Disease federal aid research projects, including budget preparation, project development and contract and report writing.20% Education and Technical Assistance
Meets with other state and federal agencies, local parish and state officials to review user groups and landowner concerns pertaining to wildlife disease. Represents La. on the SEAFWA Wildlife Health Technical Committee and the SEAFWA Wild Hog Working Group as well as the AFWA Feral Swine Working Group, the AFWA Wildlife Health Committee, and the AFWA Lead working Group as well as the Louisiana Feral Hog Management Advisory Task Force. Develops educational material concerning wildlife diseases. Provides presentations to user groups and NGOs on wildlife disease education. Provide information to outdoor writers concerning wildlife disease.20% Administration/other duties
Prepares the budget for the Wildlife Disease Program and requisitions materials, supplies, and equipment as required. Determines program and personnel priorities. Maintains the inventory of the Wildlife Disease Program, vehicles and equipment. Prepares performance planning and review for personnel and leave requests. Prepares time sheets, vehicle maintenance logs, purchase logs, travel and reimbursement requests. Answers correspondence, letters and e-mails, and calls pertaining to the Program. Assists other Divisions, as requested. Other duties as assigned.Benefits for unclassified employees are determined by the individual hiring authority.
