  • Providing oversight to all operational activities of the lab.
  • Managing the receipt, movement, and tracking of samples and materials into and throughout the lab, ensuring that all processes are performed according to the methods detailed in the Standard Operating Procedures, Quality Assurance Plan, laboratory protocols all while maintaining appropriate QA records and documentation.
  • Assigning work activities including providing work authorization, conducting Plan of Day Meetings, Pre-job briefs, and Post Job Reviews ensuring the scope of work assigned is well understood and progress tracked daily.
  • Managing the maintenance of equipment including ensuring instruments are functional, updating equipment as necessary, and responding to equipment or instrument malfunctions.
  • Reviewing and initiating updates to procedures, forms, and any other operational documents throughout the life of the facility and ensuring documents remain up to date as per required revision cycles.
  • Providing input into annual planning and budgeting relating to equipment maintenance, lab upgrades, and resource management; participating in the evaluation and proposal of needs for equipment and instruments and reviewing purchase requisitions for new lab materials, consumables, and supplies for lab operations.
  • Acting as the designated person responsible for the safety and security of all radioactive materials and sources within the lab. Consulting with a Health Physicist on any new or non-routine work activities.
  • Acting as a technical resource in the troubleshooting of equipment and instruments; maintaining awareness of new initiatives/technology to improve analytical services; continuously seeking ways to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of processes with a focus on meeting customer needs.
  • Providing leadership and guidance to a team of 6 – 12 technologists during day to day operations including monitoring performance, providing coaching, reviewing and approving timecards, assigning day to day work activities to employees and ensuring staff are trained according to the facility’s training plan and ensuring only qualified personnel are assigned to execute analytical tasks.
  • Completing performance appraisals including having frequent scheduled touchpoints with staff, engaging in performance management where necessary and elevating any personnel issues to the Section Lead and Department Manager as necessary.
  • Participating in the selection of highly motivated and qualified staff including development of position descriptions, hiring and on-boarding processes.
  • Championing and enforcing a strong safety culture in all day to day operations within the lab by ensuring procedures are in place to govern all laboratory operations and keeping them up to date with assistance from technical staff.
  • Ensuring all necessary PPE&C is available to employees working in the labs.
  • Enforcing use of event free tools in daily lab operations including Pre-job Briefs, implementation of the Integrated Work Control Process, and Plan of day meetings.
  • Chairing routine safety meetings with the laboratory teams.
  • Maintaining good housekeeping practices within the lab facilities and ensuring safety concerns are promptly addressed.
  • Acting as Officer in Charge during emergency response and reporting all incidents to the lab Section Lead and Manager.
  • Assisting in the development and implementation of a new laboratory facility including authoring laboratory protocols and standard operating procedures, developing field schedules for the installation, calibration, testing, and validation of laboratory instruments and equipment and incorporating activities for the testing and validation of new equipment being brought online.
  • Assisting in the development and implementation of a Quality Assurance Program and ensuring QA/QC requirements are maintained in the lab including participation in the process for obtaining Lab Accreditation to ISO 17025.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for:

  • Education
  • Graduation from a recognized institute of advanced technology in a program of chemical technology or chemistry.
  • Experience
  • Experience in the application of standard Quality Analysis/Quality Control procedures and experience in an ISO 17025 or equivalent accredited lab is required.
  • Practical experience working in a laboratory environment is preferred.
  • Previous experience in a supervisory role is an asset or demonstrated experience supervising various teams for work assignments of increasing complexity.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Organizational skills to effectively manage laboratory activities with demonstrated attention to detail.
  • Interpersonal skills to work as part of a team, as well as the ability to work independently to accomplish tasks with excellent communication skills both written and oral.
  • Knowledge of inorganic analytical chemistry analysis techniques including sample handling, preparation, wet chemistry separation techniques, instrumentation, and data calculations is a requirement.
  • Computer skills and an ability to work with spreadsheets, databases, and word processing software’s are a requirement.
  • Knowledge of chemical and laboratory safety protocols, WHMIS, and a strong understanding of safety-centered approach to delivery is a requirement
  • Ability to write technical reports.
  • Articulate the basis for recommendations and decisions to support the analytical results provided.
  • Supervise technical staff, experience in a supervisory role is preferred.
  • Knowledge of CNLs Quality Analysis program and specific knowledge of ISO 17025 is an asset.
  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required
  • Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat’s “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”

Working Conditions:

  • Work is largely conducted within the lab which is temperature controlled but may at times have elevated noise levels depending on the work being performed.
