Led by the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (SRSG), UNDRR has over 150 staff located in its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and in regional offices. Specifically, UNDRR guides, monitors, analyses and reports on progress in the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, supports regional and national implementation of the Framework and catalyzes action and increases global awareness to reduce disaster risk working with U.N. Duties and Responsibilities UNDRR plays a pivotal role in supporting the global monitoring of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030, particularly through the collection and analysis of disaster-related statistics. To enable this, UNDRR launched the Sendai Framework Monitoring (SFM) System, a web-based platform where Member States report their progress toward the Sendai Framework’s seven global targets. As of 2024, 160 countries are using the system to submit critical data. In addition to the Sendai Framework, UNDRR has been advancing disaster loss accounting for over a decade, with disaster loss data now available for 120 countries. UNDRR supports Member States in systematically recording, analyzing, and reporting disaster trends and impacts through the DesInventar disaster inventory system, which is now integrated with the SFM platform. To further these efforts, UNDRR is developing the Hazardous Events and Disaster Losses and Damages Tracking System (DTS)—a system built on global statistical standards to help countries enhance their disaster data ownership, enabled sub nationally and sector disaggregated tracking of disaster impacts across sector and improve insights into risks and impacts.
