Job description
The Materials & Structures business has an exciting opportunity for a Principal Construction Materials Technician to join our internationally recognised materials consultancy team. We specialise in the assessment of new and innovative building materials and of in-service performance and failures of rock (aggregate), stone, slate, cementitious materials and polymer-based coatings in buildings and structures. The role is based in Hemel Hempstead.You will be joining a well-established team of scientists, engineers and technicians at our UKAS accredited laboratories in Hemel Hempstead, next to the Grand Union Canal. The team is friendly and collaborative with colleagues ranging from new starters to international experts.The majority of the work would take place in our dedicated physical testing laboratory, working alongside a team of concrete test technicians.Responsibilities
- Manage and optimise laboratory workflows, ensuring efficient utilisation of resources, equipment, and space. Schedule laboratory activities to meet project deadlines and maintain productivity.
- Ensure compliance with recognised testing standards by reviewing and drafting accurate certificates of test. Collaborate with colleagues to verify data accuracy and produce comprehensive reports that meet industry standards and client requirements.
- Supervise and coordinate work activities for the technicians within the physical testing laboratory. Provide guidance, mentorship and support, to foster a positive and collaborative work environment. Conduct regular performance reviews and assist in professional development plans for staff.
- Enforce safety protocols and risk assessments to ensure a secure working environment for all personnel. Stay up to date with safety regulations and lead safety training initiatives.
- Work alongside the Quality Manager to implement quality control and quality assurance processes to maintain accurate and reliable results.
- Manage laboratory inventory and procure necessary materials while optimising costs and maintaining adequate stock levels.
- Collaborate with equipment supervisor and technical staff to ensure the proper maintenance, calibration, and repair of laboratory equipment. Schedule routine maintenance and resolve equipment issues promptly.
- Oversee data management, ensuring accurate record-keeping, data entry and documentation. Implement data security measures to safeguard sensitive information.
- Demonstrate excellent self-management, organisation and communication (written and oral) with clients and colleagues.
Qualifications/Experience
- Proven experience in materials laboratory or testing facilities (preferably construction materials), including staff supervision and resource allocation.
- Able to work independently and as part of a team.
- Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities.
- Strong written and verbal communication is essential.
- Computer literate and competent with Microsoft Office applications.
- Self-motivated, with diligence and integrity.
- Full UK driving licence.
