Do you want to work in an environment where you will be responsible for promoting and enhancing the safety culture at Whiteshell (WL)? Can you see yourself assisting in the implementation of the Occupational Health & Safety Program and providing support to line managers, workers and contractors to ensure responsibilities related to occupational safety and industrial hygiene are fulfilled?   • Providing industrial safety expertise for operational and demolition activities.
  • Developing hazard identification and mitigation techniques for operations and work control.
  • Characterizing the site hazards, developing inventories as per regulations and site procedures.
  • Maintaining worker exposure inventories, and supporting the health center in performing hearing testing and scheduling medical baselines.
  • Performing monitoring for worker exposures to occupational safety and industrial hygiene hazards as required.
  • Reviewing and assisting with work being planned and performed for contractors to ensure compliance with all company and government regulations, to ensure consistent approaches to work onsite.
  • Working with line supervision and employees to ensure safety is integrated into all site activities.
  • Identifying problem areas from participation in workplace inspections and accident investigations and making recommendations to line management for improvement.
  • Developing and maintaining occupational safety programs, policies and procedures, guidelines and training materials.
  • Developing and delivering effective and efficient safety training, either directly to employees, or to line supervision so they can instruct their own employees.
  • Assisting line management with incident investigations that identify apparent causes, root causes, and provides appropriate recommendations to prevent recurrence.
  • Applying risk management principles in order to grade and remediate hazardous situations.
  • Promoting the WL Near Miss program.
  • Promoting safety culture by being a role model and setting the safety standard on site.
  • Attending and actively participating in Fact Finding/Rapid Learning investigations.
  • Acting as mentor to new employees, and visitors to our site.
  • Maintaining instrument calibrations and supply inventories to provide timely support to operations and project work.
  • Maintaining confidentiality in all matters.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for:

  • Education
  • Occupational Health and Safety Professional Certificate recognized for CRSP (Canadian Registered Safety Professional) designation or equivalent.
  • Experience
  • Seven (7) or more years’ of relevant safety experience in construction/demolition environments involving heavy equipment.
  • Advanced industrial hygiene knowledge in areas such as Asbestos, Silica, hazardous chemicals/WHMIS, noise, heat-stress, confined space entry, and personal protective equipment and clothing (PPE&C).
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Understanding of work related injuries and case management.
  • Understands injury statistics and performance metrics – can develop them and interpret them.
  • Initiative and judgement to organize and maintain flow of work and accuracy of records.
  • Exceptionally organized and detail oriented with the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrates responsibility and is accountable for accurately handling the details associated with one’s work; conscientious about accuracy.
  • Ability to adapt to a changing environment and respond with initiative.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills – written and oral – and proven ability to maintain successful working relations at all levels within the organization and with external stakeholders.
  • Able to provide prompt, clear and concise guidance as required. The candidate must be tactful and diplomatic, able to work effectively with employees, contractors and line management.
  • Able to present recommendations, complete regulatory reporting and technical writing in a clear and effective manner.
  • Able to effectively handle and diffuse difficult situations real time with internal and external clients.
  • Understand Human Performance principles: Not just what an employee did but also why they did it (learned experience/beliefs).
  • Highly motivated and able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must possess a working level knowledge of hazards presented by industrial work environments, including process systems and components, machine tools and heavy equipment.
  • A working knowledge of currently available PPE &C as well as other safety related equipment.
  • Working level knowledge of industrial safety legislation relating to general operational systems, construction and demolition environments.
  • Able and willing to develop and maintain working level knowledge of specific federal and provincial legislation that affects occupational health and safety within CNL.
  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required
  • Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat’s “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”

Working Conditions:

  • The incumbent must be in good physical and mental health to perform the duties of the position.
  • Must be willing and able to wear a respirator and other PPE&C as required.
  • Must possess normal physical agility necessary to perform all aspects of the work that involves bending, lifting and mobility.
  • Combination of office based and field level work, including work outdoors in inclement weather and temperatures ranging from +30C to -40C.
  • Prolonged periods of sedentary office work when preparing reports and other documents.
  • Heavy workloads that require knowledge of industrial safety & hygiene principles and heavy equipment operations, on a wide range of hazards.
  • Operational and decommissioning environments – i.e.; laboratories, workshops, confined spaces, heights, etc.
