Job PurposeTo develop research, knowledge exchange and impact activities as a key member of the Civic Imaginary Partnerships project based in the Division of Urban Studies and Social Policy. The role is funded by a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship, and the successful candidate will work with Dr. Michael Howcroft and partners across the UK to develop long-term ethnographic understandings of contemporary civic cultures. You will be joining the project at its early beginning will be supported to contribute to the project design and to lead key activities. It will produce traditional and non-traditional outputs about the civic imagination’s role in local development, advancing new models and evaluative frameworks for place-based interventions and new avenues for place-based research.The role requires expert knowledge in local governance and participation, creative research methods, working with creative practitioners in community settings and experience with participant and non-participant ethnography. Theoretical/conceptual knowledge of place, the civic, and a detailed awareness of place-based policies and practices across the four nations of the United Kingdom and internationally will be an asset. A flexible/hybrid working arrangement is possible, and given the nature of the research methodology, the project involves national and international travel. In years 2 and 3 (roughly Oct 2025-Sept 2027) the successful candidate will be required to work for extended periods within two case study neighborhoods (Hull, Southampton, Chester and Frome). This should not exclude candidates with accessibility needs as adjustments to activities can be planned to successfully deliver the project.Main Duties and ResponsibilitiesPerform the following activities in conjunction with the Project PI as appropriate:1. Research and draft a literature and evidence review on civic imaginary theory and practice.2. Co-design and deliver civic imaginary case study “hubs”. The successful candidate will be responsible for the day-to-day management of at least one of these, including liaising with local partners, participants and collaborators.3. Take a leading role in developing and maintaining collaborations with stakeholders across the project and in the broader School/College/University and wider community (e.g. Academic and other collaborators/partners).4. Support the delivery of internal and external communications, the delivery of events and meetings and shaping future research, funding, and externally focused activities.5. Design and deliver appropriate media to engage with a range of audiences (including academics, policy makers, press, practitioners and the public) and effectively communicate the project’s aims and outputs. This could include print, digital, video, graphics, social media and webinars.6. Establish and maintain your research profile and reputation and that of the School/College/University, including establishing and sustaining a track record of independent and joint publications of international quality in high profile/quality refereed journals, presenting at conferences/seminars, enhancing the research impact in terms of economic/societal benefit, gathering indicators of esteem and identifying opportunities for funding and knowledge exchange.7. Engage in personal, professional and career development, to enhance both specialist and transferable skills in accordance with desired career trajectory.8. Undertake any other duties of equivalent standing as assigned by the Head of School and/or PI.9. Contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategy 2025, World Changers Together, World Changing Glasgow 2025.These key tasks are not intended to be exhaustive but simply highlight a number of major tasks which the staff member may be reasonably expected to perform.Knowledge/QualificationsEssential:A1. Normally Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) or alternatively possess the equivalent in professional qualifications and experience, with experience of personal development in a similar or related role(s)A2. Specialist theoretical and practical knowledge in at least three areas relevant to the field of research, specifically community development, placemaking, civic engagement, community cohesion, cultural policy, communities and local government policy.A3. Practical knowledge of ethnographic practices and creative methods in community settings.Desirable:B1 Practical knowledge working ethically and equitably with participants, including seldom heard communities.B2 Knowledge of current issues and future directions for community-focused or community-led policymaking and community development.SkillsEssential:C1 Research skills in collecting, creating, collating, storing and analysing data across a number of different disciplinary fieldsC2 Excellent communication skills (oral and written), including public presentations and ability to communicate complex information, theory and concepts clearly and conciselyC3 Excellent interpersonal, team and listening skills and ability to interact effectively with people at different levels within a wide range of companies, public and government organisations, and voluntary organisations.C4 Excellent IT skills including social media, virtual working and hybrid/virtual networkingC5 Self-motivated with ability for initiative and independent thought/workingExperienceEssential:E1 Proven ability to deliver quality outputs in a timely and efficient mannerE2 A track record of presentation and publication of research results in quality journals/conferencesE3 Ability to demonstrate a degree of independence as illustrated by identification of project objectives from assessment of the literature, design & analysis of experiments & drafting of outputs.E4 Commitment to open research, as appropriate to the discipline, through open data, open code, open educational resources and practices that support replication.E5 Experience of ethnographic research methods including creative, participatory methods.Desirable:F1.
