Since the 19th century, our crews have been risking their lives to save those who are in danger of drowning.We’re looking for a Senior Engineer (Lifeboat Services) to deploy on placement to the Lifesaving Operations Team. This role will be a secondment opportunity to the Lifeboat Services team, to act as a technical subject matter expert on Lifeboat operations. The secondee will provide support to all the functions within the Lifeboat Services department and the wider RNLI as required to support the framework and processes that underpin the safe, effective, and compliant delivery of the engineering aspects of the RNLI Lifeboat Service.This secondment opportunity is a 12 month opportunity, during which time your previous role will not be backfilled.Your roleAs a Senior Engineer (Lifeboat Services), you will be tasked with focus on the following areas:
- To carry out design and development work and configuration change control of technical documentation to facilitate the through life product configuration of all assets and their associated equipment using the RNLI business systems and processes.
- To work within one or more of the EAM delivery and project cells and to work with the Cell Leads and project managers to ensure work is completed to agreed timescales and that Cell processes are followed.
- To become involved in other engineering ad-hoc tasks and projects as required
- Act as the focal point in LS Ops for the development of Operational Requirements for Assets and Equipment and as an advocate for the LSOps team in technical matters, representing the team as the point of contact for engineering to develop LSOps as an intelligent customer.
- Take ownership of engineering actions from risk and compliance registers as required and ensure that Operational and Engineering risk registers are aligned regarding asset and equipment risks and issues.
- Work closely with engineering and regional teams (RELs, Regional Engineers, REMs etc.) to ensure that engineering design authority processes are implemented, maintained, and improved.
- Support, where required, on the engineering inputs and outputs of the Lifeboat Governance Group.
- Provide technical subject matter expertise and support to other projects where requested.
- Own and develop the relationship with the Engineering delivery teams, Surveyors and pivotal support providers, to ensure delivery of asset engineering against extant RNLI policy and procedures. Develop and maintain relationships with key external and internal stakeholders and technical role holders.
- Maintain expertise in maritime engineering to ensure Lifesaving Operations adhere to current industry standards, legislation, and appropriate equipment.
- Assist in developing future engineering strategies and co-ordinate / participate in research and development projects as required to enhance the effectiveness of RNLI lifeboat operations.
- Liaise closely with the Asset Planning team in the alignment of asset strategies and plans to ensure that operational considerations are represented and accounted for.
About youEssential: * Engineering degree qualification
- Full UK driving licence
- Meets RNLI medical and fitness standards and able to go to sea.
- Experience of working in an engineering environment
- Experience of multi discipline stakeholder engagement and management of project teams
- Excellent communication skills
- Experience of identifying trends and analysing information to make measured decisions
- Willing to spend time away from home at short notice
Desirable: * IOSH managing safely
- Project management qualification or experience
- Risk management qualification or experience
- Audit and assurance training
- Investigation training
- Systems engineering training or experience
- Wide engineering technical knowledge of lifeboat procedures, assets, training systems, qualifications, and equipment
- Knowledge of RNLI/SAR and lifeboat operations

- Has an agile approach towards work, is not afraid to take on new challenges and can remain balanced and objective when necessary
- Is committed to improving service delivery, can inspire other team members and act in an ambassadorial role for the RNLI
- Who is willing to spend time away from home at short notice, therefore flexibility is key
This is not an operational seagoing position, however, due to the nature of the role, it is highly desirable, but not essential, that the post holder be operationally seagoing and as such capable of going afloat in all sea conditions.
