We provide evidence-based employment support for people experiencing serious mental health difficulties.This position will be based in the Hexham Community Treatment Team in South West Northumberland, working alongside the multi-disciplinary team to provide award-winning employment support as part of community-based care and treatment.Main duties of the jobWe help anyone receiving care and treatment with the Hexham Community Mental Health Treatment Team pursue their employment ambitions in a highly person-centred way using an evidence-based approach that is proven to work.The main duties of the IPS Employment Specialist role include:
- Building strong therapeutic relationships with people experiencing serious mental health problems.
- Building strong professional relationships with colleagues in the multi-disciplinary team.
- Utilising evidence-based tools like Vocational Profiles to identify and action peoples aspirations.
- Utilising IT hardware and software to co-ordinate communication and documentation.
- Managing your time to maximise impact, including travelling in the community, visiting people in their homes and visiting businesses.
We don’t expect you:
- To know the IPS method inside out as we’ll train you.
- Have specific qualifications, as we welcome equivalent experience.
- To have a specific employment support background (we welcome diverse experience)!

- Multi-disciplinary team work.
- Proven ability to develop therapeutic partnership with service users and carers.
- Evidence of trust and service values and beliefs in working practice.
- Evidence of having unconditional positive regard for individuals experiencing serious mental health.
- Educated to degree level or equivalent
- Minimum 2 years’ experience of working with people with mental health problems or a similar user group
Desirable
- Further relevant post qualifying training
- Experience of involving service users/ carers in evaluation/planning and monitoring of services
- Educated to degree level or equivalent
Knowledge and ExperienceEssential
- Understanding of the statutory issues which impact on service users.
- Good understanding of the principles and practice of supported employment
- Awareness of common mental health conditions and how these can impact on an individual.
Desirable
- Knowledge of employment law
- Knowledge of IPS principles of approach
- Knowledge of the benefits system.
- Knowledge and/or experience of working in Newcastle
- Awareness of services, businesses and community provision in local area

- Adaptability, flexibility, good communication skills and a commitment to multi-agency team work
