Kidney Specialist Mental Health NurseKidney disease is often incurable but treatable. It carries a considerable psychological burden. A significant proportion of renal (kidney) patients at King’s are living with severe mental illness (SMI), as well as trying to cope with the usual demands of treatment. This can give rise to a number of significant challenges for them and for the healthcare professionals looking after them.We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic, dedicated and motivated Kidney Specialist Mental Health Nurse to enhance mental health provision within the King’s College Hospital Renal Unit. You will assess, plan and provide appropriate interventions, using evidence-based models of care.The department provides comprehensive psychosocial care through its Kidney Psychosocial Team, which is comprised of three psychological therapists, two social workers and a specialist mental health nurse, with dedicated input from a consultant psychiatrist.The successful candidate will be a creative and driven practitioner. In this setting you will need to be robust and resilient, experienced in working with complex presentations, and able to set clear boundaries and work priorities.The team base is Denmark Hill, but some in-person attendance at our satellite dialysis units across south-east London will be required from time to time.Main duties of the job
- To work as a highly experienced mental health practitioner, carrying out specialist assessments and interventions as part of the renal/kidney multidisciplinary team
- Enhance integrated working between the renal MDT and mental health teams to improve access to care, health outcomes and experience.
- Liaison between the renal unit and community mental health teams, initiating and facilitating interventions as part of the renal MDT.
- Coordinate patient care between the renal MDT and psychiatry inpatient and outpatient services, community mental health teams, GPs and family and community networks.
- Contribute to the psychological and mental health education / training programme for the kidney MDT and mental health professionals.
- The knowledge of and ability to deliver evidence-based interventions in line with NICE guidelines will be integral to ensuring those who present in crisis are cared for holistically; the post-holder must also have a robust understanding of risk and be able to implement patient-focused risk management plans.
- The post holder will function as a fully integrated member of the service’s multidisciplinary team, supporting consistent achievement of the service’s standards and aims, through their own individual practice and participation in quality improvement initiatives.
